Alstom rolls out first set of trains for Kochi Metro project
India's Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has received the first set of 25 Made in India coaches from French company Alstom Transport, five months ahead of schedule.
As the rolling stock manufacturer for the project, Alstom is supplying an initial fleet of 25 three-car Metropolis trainsets to KMRL under an €85m contract awarded in October 2014, which also includes options for up to 25 additional trainsets.
Under the deal, Alstom is responsible for the design, manufacturing, supply, installation and commissioning of 25 standard track gauge trains.
"It is not only the fastest manufactured coach, but also one of the most indigenised metro coaches to be manufactured in India."
Flagged off by India's Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu, the first trainset was delivered from the company's Sri City plant in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
Naidu was quoted by The Hindu as saying: "It is not only the fastest manufactured coach, but also one of the most indigenised metro coaches to be manufactured in India with indigenisation level of nearly 70%."
The new 65m-long trains will have 136 seats placed longitudinally, accommodating up to 975 passengers a car.
The new trains will be operated on the 25.6km-long Kochi network and is expected to transport 15,000 commuters an hour.
The trains were designed by Alstom's design and styling department in Saint-Ouen, France, in collaboration with KMRL and Indian design company Tata Elxsi, who is also in charge of the design of the livery of the metro.
The new trains will have a maximum speed of 80km/h, and are equipped with air-conditioning and passenger information systems.
