What's new

AL's strategy of intimidation may no longer be working

Are not you the guy crying over the matter that Jamaat has influenced America to impose sanctions? What will you do now that your BAL Police cannot kill more people anymore, thanks to Jamaat?

Narae Takbir: Allahu Akber. Bangladesh Zindabad.

Lol, check this buffoon out..

You think jamat will let you types live just because you're shouting takbir at the top of your lungs now? There are dozens of anti Muslim posts from you on this site.

You just realised that behind your US saviour dream is Jamat - so now you started licking their boots.

I actually thought you were at least honest in your beliefs - but you've proven yourself a coward

He's a faridpuira clown of low stock, who snuck onto a fishing trawler to Japan and Libya in the 80s, what else can one expect..

He thinks himself a Japani but all he is is a joke and a failure on two feet.

Spot on - honestly didn't expect him to suddenly turn jamati!

He's a nut job but I thought he might have principles - but he's a pure political animal with no beliefs.

I know it sounds terrible but we do need BAL to continue until there is a credible opposition in place who can take the country further.
A "fair" election at this stage would be meaningless as the constituency is too poorly educated and emotional to understand the long term ramifications of a takeover by an incompetent regime.
There is also the risk of unhinged religious fundamentalist groups taking over by banking on people's emotions - this would be the end of Bangladesh as we know it.

Let us be patient for another decade. A more competent political group would eventually rise and take on the mantle of development. I too would love a regime which prioritises economic development without corruption, dishonesty (fudging stats, etc.) or sucking up to India but there is no option on the table right now.

I agree that a political disruption is not good for the economy. However - we need proper checks and balances to ensure any one party cannot rule without any accountability. What that will lead to is that the ruling party will have no fear of losing power and become more corrupt by the day.

If BAL is confident of having done good work, they shouldn't be scared of a free and fair election. The same applies to BNP.

We also have to remember, unlike Malaysia and Singapore, we do have a nosy neighbor constantly trying to interfere and influence those in power so that they serve the best interest of India as opposed to Bangladesh. Like the example of buying power from Adani group at a premium compared to international rate. A political shake up helps to mitigate that to some extent.

People are much more politically aware than it used to be in the past. Most people won't vote for a packet of biriyani anymore. Gone are those days.

If BAL holds a fair election accepted by all, and still goes on to win it, it will legitimize their right to rule and improve the image in Western world. If they continue to hold on to power through force, expect more sanctions which will not bode well for the economy.

Gotta give Pinaki credit - the dude is milking BNP/Jamaat types for monetised views by telling them exactly what they want to hear. He is the Dinesh D'Souza of Bangladesh.

Not a good comparison. In 1970, the choice was between being ruled by East Pakistanis leaders vs racist West Pakistani establishment.

Well, Mahathir Muhammad and Lee Kuan Yew did not trust their people either.
With no credible opposition in sight, democracy is suicide.
Your views are somewhat similar to what the ruling class had in 1970 which is what people want in East Pakistan do not count.
You want to exclude people because those folks didn't go to high school, college or university.
The fact is these people could not afford to go to college of University, and you want to take their voting rights away because of that ?
Education gives you some extra tools to use in life but I doubt it makes you a better person.

In 1971 the elite was too educated to fight.
It was actually the uneducated folks from the villages, soldiers and police who fought the war.
It is the half literate young girls who work in the garments industry which brings in the bulk of the foreign currency.
It is the half literate poor folks who work in the Middle East bringing in the rest of the foreign currency, hundreds of them die every year working in that unbearable heat.

In your opinion they are good enough to do the hard work but not bright enough to vote.

Your views are not that different from what the ruling class thought back in 1970-71.

Not one of you have articulated who the credible opposition would be who can take the country forward. Democracy just for the sake of democracy would be useless in Bd.

What BAL or BNP think or want is a moot point here. The point is there is no one who is a better alternative to BAL.
Continuity is more important than a pointless shakeup. Look at Pakistan's useless democracy.

The tenets of representative form of government is bottom-up, it's not top-down.

You do not get to decide for people who is credible. People with whatever level of education and knowledge decide who is credible and who's not.
There's this saying there's no Jeopardy without equity, in other words if you do not have support of the people you don't care what they think about you.

Again, more theoretical jargons without any assessment of credible alternatives to BAL.
This only serves to demonstrate the lack of alternatives.

An elite proponent like you could offer an alternative like a non-elected technocratic Government , but you didn't !
Dr. Yunus and Dr. Fazle Abed created credible large companies by working with destitutes. They are more than qualified to run Bangladesh.

Yet you are saying there in no better option then AL.

Well you could just say you are an AL fanboy !

If Yunus or Abed had started a political movement, I would vote in a heartbeat but the fact is they did not. Who's fault is that?

This is basically turning into an argument on which came first - egg or the chicken.

How can there be a qualified alternative if the political environment is dominated on the basis of brute force. Qualified individuals with no backing does not stand a chance in BD. We all know that very well. If BAL dominance continues - come 2030 we will still be talking about who can be an alternative to BAL. There will be none even then since there is no political freedom and opportunity for opposing voice.

Those who are qualified and have dared to oppose, are not quite unified at the moment. I could mention Reza Kibria or Andaleev. But they don't have the manpower at grassroot level to stand against BAL on their own. So unfortunately the only credible opposition will have to be an assortment of all anti-BAL parties which of course BNP will lead given their size.

I don't mind if BAL comes back to power on the basis of a free and fair election. But they need to legitimize their right to rule and understand they could be booted out by people if they deviate from their mandate. That accountability is necessary to have a sustainable development. Otherwise, corruption will take us backwards.

Dont underestimate your own people

Your system is parliamentary by the way, then it shows that your political system quality is based more on the party.

People chose the party, then party will chose the PM

As you only have 2 strong parties, it means your democracy is better to have 2 competing force compete with each other rather than monopolizing the politics

Just common sense, market system will produce better product than in monopoly system

Not correct.

All the "Asian Tigers" from the 20th century were dictatorships during their development phase.

Even your own country Indonesia had its fastest growth during the Suharto dictatorship. Growth rates would average 7% for 30 years and over the last 25 years that has fallen to 5%.

It is not "common sense" as we know from history that democracy hampers development. There are other factors such as ethnic mix but one-party competent dictatorship trumps any other alternative.

Those crying for democracy are wasting their time as BD would continue with the successful rule we have had since 2009.

This is basically turning into an argument on which came first - egg or the chicken.

I would not trust the people of BD to elect competent people to run a country just yet. Maybe in 10 years I may change my mind.
