Almost half of all Russian families say they have enough money only for food and clothing. They say they cannot buy other things they need for their houses, such as furniture and appliances. In other words, they can buy short-term items but not long-term items.

Media reports say the information comes from a survey of 48,000 households by the state agency Rosstat. Russian media company RBK said a little more than 48 percent of families did not have money to buy smartphones or refrigerators. However, that number is an improvement – last year, almost 50 percent said the same thing.

Young families and older people who do not work were most likely to say they could not pay for more than food and clothing.

Economic troubles have damaged the public image of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In Putin’s first years as president, in 2000 to 2008, the country’s economy was growing quickly. High prices for Russia’s oil and gas exports helped create that growth.

Now, lower oil prices and restrictions by Western countries have slowed economic growth. The West ordered the restrictions to punish Russia for its interference in Ukraine, and other actions.

A recent government study found that more than 65 percent of Russians say they approve of Putin’s actions as president.

The study also found that public trust had dropped. About 32 percent of Russians said they trust Putin’s ability to resolve important problems facing the country. That is the lowest percentage he has received since 2006.

russia has not diversified economy and focused only on weapon development which they cannot continue for long with weak economy. They have no strong manufacturing industry as well as services industry and also lack software and IT giants and financial or transaction companies they are totally depending on oil and gas for their economy and if demand or price of petroleum decrease they will have no other means to earn money.Russian trolls and influence in western countries and u.s is their major weapon,If you look at any comments on youtube or other social media they are flooded with russian supporters and putin lovers

According to the study by the Russian State Statistics Service (Rosstat) on distribution of households to assess their financial situation in the Q4 of 2018, 32.3% of Russians can afford the purchase of durable goods, while 48.2% of the country's residents only have enough money for food and clothing. At the same time, out of 48,000 respondents, 14.9% indicated that they did not have enough money to buy clothes, and it was difficult to pay for utility services; 0.7% of respondents said that they do not have enough money even for food. According to Rosstat, only 32.3% of surveyed Russians can afford to buy a car, an apartment or a dacha.

Before people bash the OP perhaps take a look at what is happening around the world, this is not just a Russia problem. Its the US, Russia, Australia probably Pakistan, the inequitable distribution of wealth is bad and getting worse.

Global Wealth Inequality

The world’s richest 1 percent, those with more than $1 million, own 45 percent of the world’s wealth. Adults with less than $10,000 in wealth make up 64 percent of the world’s population but hold less than 2 percent of global wealth. The world’s wealthiest individuals, those owning over $100,000 in assets, total less than 10 percent of the global population but own 84 percent of global wealth. Credit Suisse defines “wealth” as the value of a household’s financial assets plus real assets (principally housing), minus their debts.

Russia has GDP per capita above USD 10000.

10,000 US sounds good until you realise the bottom 50% of the economy survive on 5% of GDP while the top 10% take70%, 1000$ US doesn't sound so good.

under Stalin everyone was rich but there was nothing to buy, under Putin the shops are now full but most people cant afford it.

Actually under Stalin all was ok with goods because there were plenty of collective and private manufacturing and trading organizations. I will say even more - after the War, prices decreased by 2-3 % every year - so the profits from the economy growth were distributed among the people. Problems with goods began after Stalin, when private property was banned.

I see.

Not to mention people who live in Siberia too.

Huge land mass with low population, transportation will be costly, it will add the end price of the product.

At the same time, the location is not economically strategic, goods in and out are quite costly.
