What's new

ALMOST EVERYTHING we use in Pakistan is imported.

What's your point? Just to argue and waste people's time?
If you don't have machines, you can still dry stuff and older women in Pakistan used to dry food or make pickles.
Now not many people eat fresh food in Pakistan...Most households have refrigerators and freezers.

I am only saying we are nowhere near self efficient we would like to be and should be.

Now not many people eat fresh food in Pakistan...Most households have refrigerators and freezers.

People eat fresher and healthier in Pakistan and freezers and refrigerator are needed due to hot climatic condition and not because of luxury which GoP classifies them.

95-97% of all the produce used by 95% of Pakistanis is all locally produced...this FATSO must be talking about some imported Alcoholic drinks....

If that is true, what explains the adverse balance of payments between imports and exports?

Pakistan spends most of the dollars at the import of oil

Exactly, I was laughing when this fat drum said that even the curtains are imported from China while most of overseas Pakistanis try to buy garments and textiles from Pakistan. We love the quality of Pakistani fabric. Only the electronics in our homes are from abroad because a lot of good quality home appliances are not available for example, we have been using front-loading automatic washing machines for years which were not available in Pakistan a few years back.. I don't know how it is now but I heard that now all kinds of electronics and home appliances are available in Pakistan though I don't how much of those are manufactured locally.

But as you said 90 of food items are locally produced. When I'm in Pakistan, I only want to eat Pakistani good..in fact, most of vegetables, dairy and meat from our farms and it taste so good. The only food item which are imported is the bottle of olive oil, tea (imported but packaged in Pakistan i.e. Lipton etc). But I hope we can grow olives.

All home appliances are made in Pakistan, like Dawlance, PEL, WAVES are local companies. Also the Chinese companies and others like Haier, Siemens, Phillips, LG, all have production units for AC's, Split AC's, Vacuum Cleaners, TV's, now monitors, Laptops, Smart phones are mostly made/assembled in Pakistan.

As for the food items, Pakistan is hundred percent food secure in staple food, milk, meat all kind, all lentils, fruits(the best in the world), all vegetables. Yes Smart phone and computer equipment is imported, though local assembly is there as well.

Only some food items, not used by 97% of locals like Cheese, some Chocolates, some other exotic food items are imported(not used by the masses). Edible oil, tea is imported but packed and blended here with local one.

This is really good news. I hope these are made 100% locally but even if 80+% of the components are produced locally, that's really good. I will in fact look for these products next time we need some home appliance becaue kitchen aide is not only expensive but it does not Pakistan as much to bring imported stuff.

Where do all the components for all these appliances assembled in Pakistan come from?

Pakistan imported US$60.3 billion worth of goods from around the globe in 2018, up by 26.9% since 2014 and up by 5% from 2017 to 2018.

Given Pakistan’s population of 207.9 million people, its total $60.3 billion in 2018 imports translates to an estimated $290 in yearly product demand from every person in the South Asian country.

From a continental perspective, suppliers in Asia provide almost three-quarters (73.7%) of total Pakistani imported goods. Smaller percentages originate from Europe (11.9%), North America (6%), Africa (5.3%), Latin America (1.2%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, then Oceania (0.7%) led by Australia.

The following product groups represent the highest dollar value in Pakistan’s import purchases during 2018. Also shown is the percentage share each product category represents in terms of overall imports into Pakistan.

  1. Mineral fuels including oil: US$17.1 billion (28.4% of total imports)
  2. Machinery including computers: $6.3 billion (10.4%)
  3. Electrical machinery, equipment: $4.3 billion (7.2%)

  9. Oil seeds: $1.5 billion (2.4%)
  10. Cotton: $1.3 billion (2.1%)
Pakistan’s top 10 imports accounted for 73.2% of the overall value of its product purchases from other countries.

Imported cotton had the fastest-growing increase in value among the top 10 import categories, up by 32.9% from 2017 to 2018.

In second place for expanding import purchases was the mineral fuels including oil category, up by 24.9%. Pakistani imports of organic chemicals delivered the third-fastest acceleration up by 16.5%.

Leading the decliners was animal or vegetable fats, oils and waxes via a -10.3% retreat year over year.

He may have exaggerated somewhat but fact is Pakistan is indeed rentier state otherwise our imports will not be 3 times more then exports.
