The Algerian Navy has made a qualitative leap in its deterrence capacity, positioning itself as the only country in the Mediterranean, along with Israel, with the ability to launch ground-attack missiles from submarines, specifically its two new class 636 submersibles ( modernized version of the Russian Kilo).

Nor does France currently have this ability to launch tactical missiles from its submarines - the Marine Nationale plans to incorporate Scalp missiles into its Barracuda-class submarines , but is currently only able to launch them from Freem frigates. For example, the new Spanish S-80 submarines may have the Tomahawk missile attack technology capability, but the Government must first approve this capability and its subsequent purchase.

As reported and shown by the Algerian National Defense Ministry, the submarines launched missiles on September 29 from below the surface, and then the impacts were reported on flat terrain. Although no independent witness has been able to verify the effectiveness of the launch.

The exercise was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Algerian National People's Army, Lieutenant General Ahmed Gaïd Salah, who visited the Mers el-Kabir naval base (by the way, the Mazalquivir of the Spanish landing in 1505, close to the city of Oran).

Specifically, the Algerian Ministry of Defense announced that the submarines destroyed ground and naval targets with Club-S cruise missiles (an Algerian variant of the Russians Kalibr ).

Currently, in the Mediterranean there are eight countries that have submarines: Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt and Algeria.

Algeria's qualitative leap is evident because, together with Israel in the Mediterranean - as we have commented - in the world only the USA, Russia, China, North Korea and the United Kingdom have that capacity to launch the missile from a submarine and destroy ground targets. It must be remembered that each time North Korea carries out one of these tests, it raises the consequent reactions in neighboring countries.

Algeria has focused on the underwater weapon to enhance its navy: without frigates, without aircraft carriers ... with some coberta, submarines are now their most advanced deterrent weapon. The Moroccan neighbor , with which disputes are historical, not have submarines in its fleet but has shown a desire to purchase.

Right now, Algeria has six submarines:

  • Four from class 636 (variant of the Russian Kilo): two were delivered to Algeria from the Russian shipyards of Saint Petersburg in 2010; and another two in January of this year (from these the missiles were launched).
  • Two other 877EKM submarines, also of the older Kilo class, and delivered in 1987 and 1988, though later modernized in 1993 and 1996.
In addition, the Algerian Navy plans to acquire two other 636 class submarines.

Pakistani submarines also have the ability to launch missiles from submarines.

But Algeria doesn't seem to have interest in cooperation with us or any other South Asian country.
Algeria is neutral, I am sure if the occasion presents itself, they won't say no..
But Algeria zone of interest is the Mediterranean area and the Atlantic..
We just had war games with Russia and China not far from the Lybian border, we had with Turkey not long ago...and very often with the US sixth fleet ..
