Russia is to supply China with an additional batch of 100 Klimov RD-93 turbofan engines for the FC-1/JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft before the end of 2016, officials said at Airshow China 2014 in Zhuhai.

The contract, signed between Rosoboronexport and Chinese officials, follows an original USD238 million contract for 100 engines concluded in 2005 and completed in 2010.

A joint venture between China and Pakistan, the JF-17 is currently only in Pakistan Air Force service.

The first contract for 100 RD-93s had an option for 400 more, which will be produced by Moscow-based machine-building plant Chernyshev, a division of the United Engines Corporation (UEC).

At Airshow China a high-ranking official in the Russian deputation confirmed that the fifth-generation Shenyang J-31/FC-31 is also equipped with the RD-93.

A UEC official also told IHS Jane's that the Russian company and the China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) had signed an agreement to upgrade the RD-93. The agreement "comprises consecutive modernisation of the propulsion system in the area of increasing thrust and the arranging of the turbofans shipments to China", said the UEC official.

He did not specify when China would start to receive the upgraded RD-93. Under UEC's existing contract with CATIC the Russian company is to perform deliveries, designer supervision, maintenance, refurbishment, and assistance in organising the RD-93 overhaul for basic and export FC-1/JF-17 fighters.

Thanks...great news.

Is the next 100 RD-93 basic or upgraded one?

What is the expected next engine for J-31 ?

. .
Good news is JF-17 getting a better engine but bad news is WS-13/? series Engine is not yet satisfied by its user ??
i hope engine up gradation will enhance the performance of JF-17 more and attract customer .

Hi,

Let me share something with you---if there was war---paf would go to battle with the RD 93 and not the WS13----why----RD93 is a proven and tested system---thousand and thousands of hours of actual service---pilots know how it is going to perform---technicians know what to service to keep tem going----.

. .
There is a initial order of 100 , is solely for block 1 or block 1+2 ?

No spare engines ?

And the up gradation deal seems consequent meaning either after this deal or upgrading the installed engines later...

.
This is for blockii only, as the last batch of 100 for block 1. No upgrade

Even words clearly spelt out cannot be comprehended by people?

"Russia is to supply China with an additional batch of 100 Klimov RD-93 turbofan engines for the FC-1/JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft before the end of 2016, officials said at Airshow China 2014 in Zhuhai."

"He did not specify when China would start to receive the upgraded RD-93."

The next 100 engine batch will be plain old RD-93 with 11,230lbf Dry Thrust, 8300kgf/18300lbf Wet(Afterburner) Thrust and 18900lbf ~ 19200lbf Emergency Thrust.

RD-93MA, if at all it becomes a reality, will have a maximum Wet/Afterburner Thrust of 9,300kgf.

BTW, where the hell is the block-2 anyway?

My estimate
around 10-20 will be reserved for F-31 prototypes (around 5 prototypes)
Some 10 odd will be in reserves for F-31 program.
Given F-31 program takes longer than expected.
this leaves around 70 articles for Block III plus exports....
Block III's potential requirements would be around 70 alone, leaving none for exports
so most likely these engines would be for export sales. Block III's deal would come at some later stage.

These engines are for block 2.
Keep in mind that there is one engine kept in reserve for the jets.
That would mean the first 100 were for block 1 while this batch is for block 2.
That will also tally nicely with current production estimate, i-e 2016.
