What's new

Airlines food experiences.

For me its not about the quality of the choices. The issue is really the fact that the plane is a confined space and the smell of all those food trays will just overwhelm me. My way out of this is that i will order a fruit platter at booking. They serve the special meals first. I will just eat it and by the time they start giving out regular meals i am done with mine and rubbed that wet tissue on my nose  to keep off the smell a bit. Honestly speaking, i am not very choosy with my food and will like to try new things all the time, just that i cannot eat the plane food.
Well, I'm sick of confined spaces.. and that's I always like to travel business class mostly on the long haul flights i.e. flights longer than 3 hrs in duration..which costs me twice as much or even more but I find it worth every penny..

Because I can save money on other stuff like I spend very little on shopping..mostly I avoid shopping until it is mandatory like someone's birthday is coming up or someone special asked me to bring something. I don't do shopping for myself. However one exception, whenever I go the Germany, I try to do maximum shopping because it is much cheaper than Scandinavia and also while flying to Pakistan, if I have a stop over in UAE, I try to buy gifts for my friends and family because it not only saves money but it is an activity on the connecting airport and I find it better than the boring business class lounges. But I try avoid buying electronic stuff from UAE because of the stuff is "do nambar" even if you buy from Dubai mall.

There are worst experiences imagine travelling to Pakistan via PIA Manchester to Pakistan or Heathrow to Pakistan as soon as doors are shut and the airplane is on taxiway you olfactory senses are attacked by the smell of hours old parathas, achaar, qeemay walay naan and what not. Before the plane takes off your appetite is gone. Airline being PIA after few such delightful experiences decided never to travel on these destinations via PIA.

Well, I never travelled on this route with PIA but once I think I had Emirate/PIA..Europe to Dubai Emirates and then Dubai to Lahore PIA and it was this connecting flight from Manchester on which I boarded from Dubai ..the guy sitting behind me was smashing the touch display and I had to show him my fists and I threatened to beat him flat into a pancake if he did it again.. And he got scared and rest of my flight was okay (apart from the crying babies :( ). When I woke up, I saw he changed the seat with some of his family members and continued with his game of smashing the LCD.

Best in no particular order:
  1. Qatar
  2. PIA
  3. Serene (domestic Pak)
  4. Turkish
  5. Air Asia
  6. Singapore
Worst:
  1. Malindo
  2. Lion Air
  3. Emirates

Agreed overall the home food is better ...Normally the food in business class is better and portions are larger and more options are available. I mostly eat at stop over airports if is not a direct flight. Now it is my compulsion to eat to eat airplane food because I have to travel so I've kind of acquired the taste.

PIA's food, as far as I remember, used to be kind of mix of desi food. It has been a while since I travelled with PIA but now as PIA is recovering from losses and flying to more destination along with improving the overall quality, I will inshaAllah travel with PIA...apart from other people, my experience with PIA's staff has been better. And the fun of talking in Urdu with the crew, just a different experience that I cannot express in words but still I see inferiority complexed people trying to use English in their hard desi accents...I'm like WTH :(

I travelled with Ryanair on my first Euro trip, three good things I liked..It is cheap, it is very punctual and it is safe but I hate three things that normally it flies second class airports which are quite far from the city so extra travelling cost & time and some time no good options are available, second every amenity costs extra and third the behaviour of the staff is not good and borderline racist. So I stopped using Ryanair. Among cheap airlines Norwegian is better.
Norwegian free wifi

What is airline
Which has line in air ;)

Yes ryanair prefers alternative airports for the city but it is to reduce costs. Ryanair flies from London Stanstead, Luton and Southend and to be honest with you I prefer Stanstead over Heathrow due to being just 40 minutes drive from my home. To be honest with you, their food is not bad as you at least get to drink very hot soup or coffee when needed. If you pay £100 for a flight from London to Berlin... why not pay £10 or £20 for Ryanair? You are welcome to carry your own food as they don't mind.

In some countries Ryanair airports can be painfully far away such as the one in Oslo Rygge... but then look at the peanuts you are paying to them.

I think this thread is good for general opinion but it really depends the service you expect to receive on the route of journey. For example I travelled from London to Pakistan via Saudi Arabia and the plane from London to Jeddah felt like Rolls Royce... and after staying for few days in Saudi... my plane from Jeddah to Lahore felt like Toyota Prius.

Also the last time I travelled on British Airways was back in 2003ish... from London to Islamabad... and the service may have improved or worsen.

I used to travel via Stanstead whenever I had to visit the Cambridge university for my research and later as a guest lecturer. I preferred it over Heathrow for two reasons ..it is closer to Cambridge and it takes less time to get out of the airport, it is simple and smaller. Stanstead was perfect for me.

BTW, I did not comment on their food because I never ate... I used to think they don't serve or I have to pay. I'm one of those passengers who often fall asleep even before take off especially when I'm travelling in a short haul flight in economy. That's my way of handling the stress of travel. Though if it is business class and long haul flight, then I work onboard and prepare for the meeting, lint and refactor codes, review documents and prepare presentation.

The same is true for Stockholm, it flies from Skavsta and Vasteras both of which are quite far and only especial buses go there and it is a desolate area and if you arrive late, it can be quite stressful to find a suitable transport. In addition to paying extra.

Singaporean airlines - (Good sized meal book halal + awesome service)
Malaysia airlines - (Good sized meal)
Turkish airlines - (Good food)
Thai airways - (the smell when you enter the aircraft makes me sick! But service is good and cheap! Good sized meal book halal)
Eitihad - (Good sized meal)
Lufthansa - (Good sized meal book halal + good service)
