Air intakes

. . . . . .
I wonder why Russian planes have very crude designs for intakes. What is the advantage that western jets get by having such aerodynamically shaped intakes? Is it just that the flight is more streamlined? What are the effects on speed, maneuverability and efficiency?

The T-50 intake is not real. It has been proven to be a fake. The above pics for T-50 are a photo shop, and the Inlet Guide Vanes are copied from the 117C engine pic.

In reality, the compressor blades are not visible straight through the inlet. They are only visible at a certain angle.

Very cool, almost organic...

Airflow to the engine is critical. Smoother airflow makes an engine less vulnerable to compressor stalls, chugging, and other malfunctions.

This is also a photoshop?

MiG-29, Su-27 and T-50 have adjustable air intakes. They improve air flow, improve maneuvrability and protect engines during the take off.
