Air India Divestment LIVE: Air India Divestment LIVE: Air India will head back to the Tata Group after decades flying as the national carrier, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), Secretary, Tuhin Kanta Pandey announced today. Tata Sons will pay Rs 18,000 crore for the Maharaja, outbidding a consortium led by SpiceJet’s Ajay Singh who had bid Rs 15,100 crore. The transaction is expected to be close by end of December this year. The central government had started evaluating the bids for the debt-laden national carrier earlier last week. Reports suggest the Tata Group is the front-runner to win the Maharaja, while SpiceJet’s Ajay Singh is the other bidder competing for the airline. The evaluation of bids was done against an undisclosed reserve price.
The governments, over the years, have tried selling the money guzzling airline but to no avail. The debt-laden carrier has 127 aircraft, controlling 50.64% of the International market share when clubbed with AIXL, among Indian carriers. Air India currently serves 42 international destinations. The government is selling its entire stake in Air India. Tata Group already owns about 84% stake in AirAsia India and 51% in Vistara.

Good news.

The airline needed to be overhauled to make it more competitive both domestically and internationally. Hopefully, the airline will be more customer-focused rather than employee-focused.

My parents use to fly Air India to go to India, but years of shoddy service and rude behavior by airline staff forced them to switch to, at first, European carriers, and, now, Middle Eastern carriers.

Most important, it will -- hopefully -- no longer be in need of countless bail-outs and subsidies. I'm sure the unions are not happy about things, but they good ride for a long time.

Hopefully, other PSUs will be privatized in the coming months.

Unions even in the US end up being a slow poison after while.

Great news..!!
Govt are just bad businessmen , let the professionals handle business.
The privatisation of OFBs was also a master stroke, now we can expect some decent products from OFB.

OFBs have just been split into PSUs. They have not been privatized.

GOI stole Air India from JRD. Now the same airlines is sold back to TATAs in an unenviable state. The tax payer has been carrying this burden as a punishment for Nehruvian socialism :undecided:

. .
One thing is astonishing is how well TATAs have nurtured their image in public mind, imagine if Ambanis would have won this bid all hell would have broken loose

.
Tata should model this airline on the lines of middle eastern carriers which I feel are the best in the world currently

.
nothing is gonna change. It will still smell like chapatti and pickles
And have dandruff on seats. 💁🏻‍♂️

Hub and spoke model won’t work in india because their connectivity with the world is not strong

.
So the rumours were true. Although it's a prestige for TATAs to get their beloved company back and paying around $2.3 Billions, the whole Air India fiasco was an attempt at socialism which fell flat. The government has no business running a "business". At some point any babus can make a profitable company go down the drain.

In the 60s-80s the main enemy of the "Socialist" boomer generation used to be TATA and Birla. Now it's Adani and Ambani.

.
Air India began as Tata Air and now she returns to the Tata family, wish them all the mess, they are PIA but on steroids.

.
PIA was stolen from mirza isphahani father of abul isphahani. It was named orient Airways but pakistani establishment stole it. Now establishment trying everything to sale it people like malik riaz, shareefs, tareen or fouji group.
