The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will get a major capacity boost from early 2018 as an additional launch pad is fast nearing completion. “The total market value of these small satellites could reach $30.1 billion in the next 10 years, up from $8.9 billion over the previous decade,” said Maxime Puteaux, Senior Consultant at Euroconsult and editor of the report.

ISRO has set a target to reduce the cost of a satellite launch manifold with the reusable rocket whose next phase of tests will begin in the next year.

Also, the first launch pad is being upgraded for 'Integrate- transfer- launch' (ITL) operations, as is the norm in second & third launch pads.

SDSC SHAR has two operational launch pads for meeting the requirements of Indian Space Programme. The First Launch Pad (FLP) caters primarily to the needs of launching PSLV Vehicles. The Mobile Service Tower (MST) at FLP enables integration of vehicle on the Launch Pedestal. The present configuration of FLP is suitable for “Integrate on Launch Pad” concept, where vehicle is being integrated on Launch Pad itself.

With the available infrastructure, the maximum number of PSLV missions possible from FLP is 6 per annum. Hence, augmentation of necessary infrastructure facilities is planned through ‘PSLV Integration Facilities (PIF) Project’ to meet the increased launch frequency of the operational launch vehicles. By augmenting FLP to adopt the “Integrate, Transfer and Launch (ITL)” concept, with execution of vehicle integration works in parallel, it is feasible to have a maximum of 15 launches per annum.


Objectives

    • Development of PSLV Integration Facilities (PIF) where PSLV can be integrated upto fourth stage (PS4).
    • Usage of Mobile Launch Pedestal in place of fixed Launch Pedestal.
    • Transportation of integrated vehicle (upto PS4) in Integration Building at PIF to Launch Pad by suitable rail track and hauler.

With this, the launch pad occupancy time for vehicle build-up will be optimized to 15 days and one more vehicle can be assembled upto fourth stage at PIF simultaneously. For refurbishment of Launch Pedestal, one Service Building is identified where Launch pedestal refurbishment can be done in parallel to vehicle integration activities at PIF and MST. With the proposed configuration, as work is planned in parallel at three different facilities, the overall campaign time will be optimized to about 23 days and it will be feasible to have 15 launches per annum.

Nice info. But the main aim is launching future full scale RLV and HLV.
