Bangladesh mob torches Ahmadiyya festival site

DHAKA: Bangladeshi Ahmadis on Thursday shifted the site for their centenary celebrations after thousands of religious rivals torched the original venue.

A mob, which witnesses said numbered around 20,000, attacked the venue at Kaliakoir, near Dhaka, late Wednesday where members of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat were due to mark 100 years since the movement began operating in what is now Bangladesh.

“They attacked the venue from all corners, shouting Allahu Akbar (God is greater). They torched the canopy, tents and stage,” Sanjit Kumar, a senior police official, told AFP.

“We fired rubber bullets and tear gas at the mob, but it was so huge that we could not protect the venue,” he said, adding that one person was injured after he was beaten up.

Founded in 1889 in India, Pakistan declared Ahmadis as non-Muslims after it adopted a law in 1974.

In Bangladesh, where 90 percent of the country’s 153 million people are Muslims, there is no such law. But Islamic parties and top clerics have long demanded the government declare them non-Muslims.

Ahmadiyya Jamaat’s Bangladesh spokesman Tabshir Chowdhury alleged that despite repeated request for more security, only a few policemen were sent to protect the venue, situated 40 kilometres north of the capital.

“We got government approval for the three-day meet where 10,000 of our members, including 200 foreign guests, were invited,” he told AFP.

“When we saw mob was building up and threatening to attack the venue, we asked for more security.”

He said the venue for the celebrations had been shifted to the group’s headquarters in Dhaka.

The Ahmadiyya Jamaat has been the victim of several attacks in recent years, including last November when a mob in a northern district vandalised an Ahmadi place of worship and torched several houses belonging to the community.

:lol:Awami League plotted sectarianism to tarnish jamaat and get them banned.

They were not Jamatis idiot.. If the number is 20,000 in a village of Kaliakoir, they were most probably common people of the village... Anyway, corruption of Islam shouldn.t be tolerated at any cost, Bravo Kaliakoir... Bangladesh is with you!

By the way i have been to Kaliakoir..... There was a beautiful river...

Think it through a hundred times & then look towards Pakistan ! We disowned & persecuted loyal sons of the soil - the Ahmedis - for their corruption of Islam & in the process not only lost them but also set a dangerous precedent for future generations of puritans whereby it went from the Ahmedi to the Shia & the Sunni & then to the sects within the sects.

So do think it over a hundred times.

when ahmedis stay within their parameter and dont provoke the majority they never had any problem. But time to time Ahmedis choose to be used as tool for indians for division and unrest, that is when problem begins. This is not the first time, Ahmedis did the same just before election in 2006. Besides, sect is not big issue in Bangladesh only indians try to use it for neforious motive.

Note to Bangladeshis: please dont let indian trolls get to you. indians are just hanging on to any straw they can get hold of.

@Armstrong the red line is correct... Ahmadis can have a peaceful life in bd if they keep their religion among themselves... recently they were trying to publicize their religion .. few days ago, they advertised in all the top newspapers which attracted huge criticism... Its conditional you know .. 90% bengali sunni hanafi muslims ( most homogenous in world) will never tolerate few thousands ahmadis.. please come to reality instead of living in an ideal world.....

We need to agree to dis-agree, Ahmadiyya people are nice, hardworking, patriotic people - they serve in all facets of life, even in the Armed Forces. We should let them believe what they want, and let the Almighty decide who is right and wrong.

There shall be no compulsion in religion.

What nonsense! Anyone should be allowed to advertise in newspapers! Most Indians don't own cars - so should Hyundai, Tata, Suzuki stop bombarding us with those ads and should the people go torch the cars?
