Ahmadinjead's thoughts about such a regional arrangement is not far fetched, the very fact that he is talking about it so openly means that the subject is a matter of debate between other leaders too.

What are your thoughts?

It would be a very good development. I really really hope such an alliance happens soon, just one clarification, is the allaince solely based on religion, or is it on geo-strategic goals or geography.

wow, he didnt even mention malaysia, indonesia, the fastest developing muslim nations

Geo strategic regional alliance. Islam will always remain a part of such an agreement because it is the only force that can unite otherwise hugely divided countries.

They are not in our region.

Pakistan-Iran-Turkey-Iraq-Syria-Jordan-Lebanon-Saudi Arabia- UAE, Egypt etc. They are all geographically linked like the EU. It can look like an extended map of GCC.

All things will be considered but understand that Islam is what unites us beyond our racial differences.

@Aeronaut however I believe this request will fall on deaf ears.

Don't like the idea, Pakistan does not need a regional alliance with these countries except for China, Pakistan needs to distance itself from countries like Iran and KSA and Afghanistan and others they bring sectarian conflict and trouble. Pakistan needs a new direction a new alignment and partnership with countries like Turkiye, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and strengthen ties with EU, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia and a few others.

I would like to see Pakistan focus on an alignment an partnership with Scandinavian countries, we've had enough of this hell hole region in between a billion troubling Hindus on our right and medieval sectarian crazies Iran, Afganistan and KSA on our left.

Check out my thread below this is the better path for Pakistan. We need a new and modern Pakistan, hopefully if IK is elected he will help in this path.

Based on common values and common interests.

For discussion purposes can you please elaborate "common interests", @Aeronaut sir can you add your view of common objectives for such alliance?
@Oscar your views on this thread will be highly valuable

Simple, increasing trade and establishing more political and (in the future) possibly even military cooperation would make all regional countries prosper and lead to more stability and peace. Also, the West would stop thinking about attacking/invading and plundering another ME country. It won't happen any time soon though, we are far too divided and far too stupid. I think we ( i.e. the people of the region) need more suffering and pain before we begin to realize the absolute necessity of regional integration.

Announcing such alliance will cast aspersions of threat in western world, the reason for which is not based on logic but just the fear of change, thats human/social nature.

First step I think, which will take these nations on this path is establishment of extensive trans national railway networks. That should be the immediate priority.

Permanent residence features to member nations.

Richer Oil based economies should start looking into Investment in member state economies especially in education and infrastructure.

Nation state that enjoy better relation with west like SA, UAE, Pakistan,Jordan etc should focus in conflict resolution and multilateral negotiation for disputes.

Better energy co-operation among member states

This can be a start!

Such an arrangement is not a new idea but was discussed extensively between leaders like King Faisal, Bhutto, Reza Shah, Gamal Nasir, Abdullah 1 etc. The objectives are obvious, we share socioeconomic, cultural, religious, historic and geographic basics. Such an arrangement will focus on economy, trade and freedom of movement between countries. All of these countries have extensive energy, scientific and human resources which cannot be said about one single country. It is a win win because the proposed, member states, need to become economically competitive to keep up with the rest of the world. Open borders means more public interaction means more peace between nations.Countries like these, if they merge their resources can become a force to be reckoned with. Strategic alignment of the region will shift, as China rises as the new superpower,India becomes a regional powerhouse and the United States becomes energy independent of the Middle East.

Last but not least, there is a security aspect to it as well, because all of these countries need credible security mechanism which can be mutually achieved by combining forces and perhaps creating a mini NATO, for regional security with Pakistan providing the nuclear umbrella, and getting its place and chunk of commerce in return. Turkey can become, what it wants to after the EU is kicking it out every time. Saudis will see end to their rivalry with Iran and Egypt would have an entire continent backing it up for its diplomacy with Israel. So its a win win for all of our nations, However there is one reason why it wont be achieved now, and that is the time slot until our middle eastern friends earn their democracy from these western installed tyrants. A true alliance can only be forged, when its rooted amongst the people and what better way to do it than doing it through a democratic system and that wont happen until all of the middle east is unable to kick out these dictators and become democracies. So its not a matter of IF but When.

Cheers.

We don't want no alliance with Iran terrorist supporters we should do everything to squash and crush them.

Any country is more trustworthy than Iran we caught them red handed supporting terrorists now we should starve them.

True, but it can be dealt with diplomatically.

To, a degree it already exists, we have an operational train running between Turkey Iran and Pakistan [Will be extended to China].

Turks are trying hard to reinvent the old Trans Hijaz Railway to link up with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, which means Saudi Arabia can be linked with Pakistan via train through Turkey and Iraq.

True.

Yes, there can be a forward diplomatic block of nations to deal with the west and Pakistan is enough to deal with the dragons in the east.

Better energy co-operation among member states

Yes, there can be pipelines, highways, railways for trade, tourists and pilgrims. Next step could become, economic integration, single trading currency, education system..the possibilities go as far as the imagination does. The biggest plus would be achieving peace in the middle east and Asia.

Yeah alliance.... We can see the brotherhood in Syria right now.

You, are correct. Such events are only raising the value of such an alliance, no one has projected a timeline but it is a natural alliance which wont be forged until we have democracies in every single middle eastern country.

Proxy wars will end, when the dividends of peace and cooperation will become more stronger than petty rivalries. If Turks want to reach Pakistan as a powerful friend in the east, you do need to go through Iran. Iran itself will realize that it has more to lose than to gain from petty fights with its neighbors.
