He is a genius strategist, leader and organizer!!! The way he defeated the Marathas - the grand fathers of Hindutuva/RSS etc. is amazing!!! If the Marathas had won there wouldn’t haven a single Muslim left in the sub-continent!!! May he be placed among the most righteous of the Muslim rulers!!! Pak needs to rename or build a new city after his name....

إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

Besides routinely looting them directly, the taxes imposed by Abdali on Punjabi Muslims were so high that it was impossible for them to pay such large amounts.

Then how can you name a missile after him?

Just to irk India... For example when Ghauri missile was made, it was named in response to Indian Prithvi missile. As Prithvi Raj was defeated by Ghauri, the name was given to commemorate that victory. (India, however, maintains that Prithvi simply means Earth and that the missile was not named after the last Hindu ruler of Delhi, Prithvi Raj Chauhan)

Afghanistan even formally complained to Pakistan in 2006 for naming its ballistic missiles and other weapons after historic Afghan heroes..

Actually afghan just means pathan or pakhtun people and we all know how is demography of pakhtuns in pakistan or afghanistan. Besides there wasn't any afghanistan before durrand line agreement so their claim is non-sense and absurd.

That is very interesting, so who controlled Afghan region in the pre-Durand era? Was it just a range of groups? Were they called Pakhtun at that time?

It was sometimes anexxed with persia and sometimes with central asia. Although there were paktun leaders and wariors like ahmad shah abdali, sher shah suri but again they also ruled parts of india and pakistan along with afganistan.

Fascinating, I love S.Asia & Central Asia history but there is not much clear information around some of it get distorted depending on where you read - so when and why did that area get the area get the name Afghanistan - did the British name it?

No. Ahmad Shah Abdali is the founder of the present day what we call Afghanistan. At that time present day area of Pakistan also came under his reign plus Kashmir as well.

Ok, but am I correct in thinking that historically there have not really been a ‘Afghan’ people - they were just a mixed group but never united under one like Persia etc

Like i said pakhtun tribes/ethnic people are referred to as afghans/pathans but there is ny afghan word or pathan word in pashto language. When it comes to uniting like a persia pakhtuns are tribal people and they in different part of current kpk and afghanistan(not really sure about afghanistan) had their own states ruled by the tribe.

Actually after the death of ahmad shah abdali and during the peak of british in subcontinent britain government and durrani king,Abdul Rehman Khan made an agreement, the famous durand line agreement according to which a border or line(known as durrand line) was drawn and the area on the western side of durrand line went to Abdul rehman khan and the eastern side went to british empire. Since there had been skirmishes on western side so they signed this treaty. After this agreement the state at western side became or named itself (not sure) as Afghanistan.

Here I agree with Gangus, pakistani establishment wrongly associated "prithvi" with prithvi raaj chauhan. In Hinduism "prithvi" is a deity of earth, another of their missile afterwards was named on their deity "agni" which is deity of fire and root of our local word "aag" for fire. I think the name "brahmos" also has something to do with hindu mythology. Hindus give more importance to their deities than their historical rulers or kings for some peculiar reasons.

The original area where Pashtuns/Pakhtuns aka Afghans of medieval persian texts inhabited was only restricted to Suleman mountain highlands of modern Pakistan and Afghanistan, here I have marked the size of "Afghanistan" in 1000 AD according to famous muslim persian historian Al-Beruni, From this small area they expanded over successive centuries in the sorrounding areas where pashto language is spread today.

Historically, the word Afghan has been used to exclusively refer to Pashtuns. And Afghanistan itself has been used to refer to the land they inhabit, however, the more common term was Khorasan. The region was also often considered to have included KPK and Balochistan.
