Agreements signed for first CPEC energy project in AJK

MUZAFFARABAD - The agreements for the first China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) energy project in Azad Jammu and Kashmir were singed here on Wednesday.
The agreements were signed at a ceremony attended by AJK Prime Minister, ministers and top officials of state government and chief executive officer of China’s Three Gorge Corporation and Karot power company.
Private sector’s largest-ever 720MW Karot power project will be constructed over river Jhelum at Karot which borders AJK in southern district Kotli. It will be completed in 2021 with the cost of 1.68 billion US dollars. The project will produce 3206 GWH mean energy annually which will fetch 676 million to AJK economy annually besides producing 2000 jobs for locals.
Prime Minister AJK Raja Farooq Hadier Khan, while addressing the ceremony, said the first CPEC power project in AJK will help cement the time tested friendly relationship between China and Pakistan besides bringing economic prosperity in the state.
He said AJK is blessed with huge hydro power and tourism potential and developing both will be top priority of his government. Hadier said there are no security problems for foreigners in AJK.
Fayyaz Ali Abbasi, secretary electricity, said that an important milestone has been laid by reaching agreements for implementation, payment of water use charges to AJK and land lease for project. He said most of the energy resources of Pakistan are in AJK.
Managing Director Private Power and Infrastructure Board Shahjahan Mira also addressed the signing ceremony.
