After smartphones, Samsung to manufacture TVs in Pakistan

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics is in the process of setting up a television line-up plant in Karachi, the Prime Minister’s aide on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood said on Wednesday.

“I have been informed that Samsung Electronics is in the process of establishing their TV line-up plant in collaboration with the R&R Industries at Karachi,” he wrote on his official Twitter handle.

“This is a vindication of MOC’s “Make-in-Pakistan” policy for industrialisation via rationalisation of input costs and other incentives,” he added.

Earlier in August, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued a local firm the license to manufacture Samsung smartphones locally. The company had applied for authorisation to set up a mobile device manufacturing plant in Karachi.

“In accordance with Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Regulations 2021, PTA has issued MDM authorisation to Lucky Motor Corporation Limited for manufacturing of Samsung brand mobile devices,” read a statement issued by the regulator.

Lucky Motor Corporation, a subsidiary of Lucky Cement Ltd (LCL), has signed an agreement with Samsung Gulf Electronics Co, FZE for producing Samsung mobile devices in Pakistan.

Our local assembly of mobile phones has surpassed imports CY 21. Our local assembled automobiles share has grown significantly over 2nd hand and complete built imports. Now TV industry is gearing up.

Not to mention the other sectors especially in the construction sector.

good news but I hope going forward, government is focused on making sure sure at least 70-80%% of the manufacturing starts happening in Pakistan (down the line)

Pakistan wages are low and unemployment high. Additionally the educated workpool is high. Its a win win for Samsung

This is what should have done a decade ago. This is why I call the last decade failed decade.

No investor/company will setup facilities in a country when they can import for cheap. This is what artificial currency does to a country. For example take cell phone industry Samsung market share is dropping because it is far more expensive to import as compared to other players who have set up facilities and offer competition in the midrange category. If it does not it will loose the market completely, that's why it entered in collaboration with luck group.

Samsung is the first major entrant in TV, so it will compel other companies to setup facilities.

Close to 70% of LED TV is made of open cell TV panels. This component is manufactured mostly out of China and is imported into countries like India to just make assembly plants for local sale. No manufacturer is inclined to move this out of China in a big way. Even if your government places a tariff for importing this component, the manufactures will not think of producing this panel anywhere else.
