LAHORE: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday inaugurated the Khadam-i-Punjab Daihi Roads Programme for repair and construction of rural roads in the province.

Under this project, all rural roads in the province will be repaired and reconstructed over the next three years at a cost of Rs150 billion.

The CM inaugurated the reconstruction of an eight-kilometre section of the road from Ladheke Bhullar to Pando in Suey Aasal in Kasur district.

“Rs15 billion has been allocated this year for the repair and construction of 2,000-kilometre roads in rural areas. Khadam-i-Punjab Daihi Road Programme is aimed at laying a network of rural roads in all districts of the province. The width of rural area roads will be increased from 10 feet to 12 feet.

With the inclusion of shoulders, the total width will become 24 feet. The roads constructed under the programme will be fully carpeted,” he said.

He said that millions of people living in rural areas would benefit from the programme. “This will result in provision of speedy transport and accelerate the process of economic development.

The project has been started to provide maximum facilities to the farmers. It will prove a milestone in the progress and prosperity of rural areas. It will help develop the agriculture sector.

Villagers will have easier access to schools, colleges and hospitals. It will ensure that fruits of social and economic development reach the rural populace,” he said.

He said that contractors for the project had been selected in a transparent manner. The chief minister announced that three of the best contractors would be given cash prizes and commendatory certificates. Cash prizes will also be given to their labour.

Ten of the best engineers on these roads will be given cash prizes and commendatory certificates.

“Anyone involved in malpractices will be strictly punished. Public money will not be misused or wasted. No compromise will be made on quality or transparency,” he said.

The CM directed the communication and works minister, the secretary and field officers to supervise the project closely.

The chief minister said that he would pay surprise visits to judge the quality of construction work.

As long as it's financed by Chinese firm (not Punjab govt. development budget) and project will not be another white elephant surviving on subsides, there shouldn't be any concern. Mega cities needs mass transit facilities.

Media photosessions? You probably haven't been to rural areas. I have. Often. It is appalling. And shocking to see lack of basic facilities. So I am sorry. This is not development. It is superficial veil for next election. It really does not contribute to economy. Rural development does. I so so want you to visit a rural school (kindly don't reply with a photosessions again. Just walk into one) and reality will hit you hard. And these are the places where future of our nation is being written. Not in metro-trains.

Please stop ignoring Public Transport. Every country, including the developing are striving for it. Did you know London built its train systems in the 1800s when people were under poverty line ? Look where they are now. If you close their system the whole city will collapse. Reality is its an economic asset.

India has more poverty than whole African continent. but hey guess what they are building in dozen cities and even countries like Bangladesh and Ethopia are better than us. Pakistan is not owned by the rich. Majority of our population is lower middle class and they deserve better. Just imagine if this train project is built. We have a chance to create jobs for drivers, cleaners, police, electricians, electrical, civil, and mechanical engineers. This is how cities grow and country gets economic opportunities.

India has already built development base for its economy. There is something called sustainable development that comes from building fundamental infrastructure of your country. It is rotten in Pakistan and we are not spending on it.

Doesn't Lahore already got two public transport systems already? You need a third one because it makes for big news and photo opportunity. Getting from A to B in Lahore is no issue now. And you know it. Metro train does not contribute to economic development for the money it takes but it does make for a big news.

When I visit a rural school, it has no furniture, no electricity, no fans, no drinking water, no education material (most of which is stolen and sold by teachers). Hell they didn't even have a damn school bell. More than half the kids had no shoes and more than half the teachers were absent. Those present did not even bother to take classes. And guess what kids have bring eggs, milk, grains, fruits and vegetables as present for the teachers. Yet, yet those people of village were adament to send their kids to school. Solution? You could work day in day out to improve accountability, provide basic necessaties and improve education standards for government school. But there is aproblem. It takes a lot of work and does not make for a good publicity option. So plan B. Just make a few Danish schools. Takes lot less effort and makes for good photo op. Millions of kids will still go to rotten schools but hey, who cares.

I visited a government district headquarter hospital. One of parents had a child with asthma and they needed nabulizer to restore her breathing, a very simple medical contraption. None was working and were bad for over a year. They took her to private clinic.

Right after that I visited Lahore and my heart bled. As if no one outside Lahore is worthy to be called human. Just because it is seat of power? It is good to develop modern cities but just ignore people who are consumed by poverty? Doesn't seem right to me. Absolutely not!
