After 70 years I realized that I can not stay in India as a Muslim: Naseeruddin Shah

69-year-old Bollywood legendary actor Naseeruddin Shah has expressed disappointment over the current situation in India, saying that after 70 years he has started to realize that he cannot stay in India as a ‘Muslim’.

The award-winning actor, for the first time, broke the silence over the controversial citizenship law created by the Indian government in December 2019.

In an exclusive interview to ‘The Wire’, Naseeruddin Shah said that even after 70 years, he needed to prove that he was a ‘Muslim’, as well as an Indian and his evidence, should not be denied.

He questioned that he is living in India for 70 years and working there is not proof of his Indianness, so what should he do?

In that context, the actor said that he and his family did not think that it was difficult to remain Muslim in India till now, but now they have realized that they cannot remain in India as ‘Muslims’.



According to Naseeruddin Shah, he now fears for his Muslim identity and at the same time, he is worried.

Speaking on controversial citizenship law, Naseeruddin Shah said he was surprised at the silence of Bollywood’s most influential actors in this sensitive issue.

India made the Controversial Citizenship Act in December 2019 under which citizens of six religions, Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains and Persians who came to India by December 31, 2014, from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will be granted citizenship.

Under the aforementioned law, Muslims coming from all three countries will not be granted citizenship.

Jinnahs message wasn't just about muslims

He understood that the Hindus needed a Hindu state where they could stretch out and express themselves as Hindus without restraint

A united India would just jail everyone and as the different communities sought to express themselves it would create a disaster in India

India has two solutions

1- Unite as Indians, let everyone express their identity and ensure that the state favours no group, the state and law ensures equality and the history and culture of all groups is equal

2- Partition India and end the charade because Option number 1 isn't happening

Naseeruddin Shah is kind of a barometer of the state of Indian Muslims. He comes from an affluent background, is immensely successful, has a beautiful house in Jogger's Park, Mumbai, married to a Hindu woman, and a regular in social circles. Not just filmi.

He spent the last year's of his life trying to ensure the creation of Pakistan

He turned down wealth, money, power and influence offered to him in the name of the Muslim state

It was the stupidity of Indian leaders and their one united India policy and the stupidity of Indian Muslim leaders for not understanding Jinnahs foresight

What do you mean by Indian leaders? Jinnah was the leader of All-India Muslim League.

He had the responsibility towards all Muslims of the subcontinent not just the Muslims of current day Pakistan. He miserable failed to deliver a bigger Pakistan including all Muslims of the subcontinent.

Multiple Indian leaders not only refused to listen to Jinnah but we're openly hostile to Jinnah and even the idea of Pakistan and Partition
