New Delhi (CNN)Africans living in northern India are locking themselves indoors in terror after a spate of mob attacks left several hospitalized.

Multiple attacks on Kenyan and Nigerian students have been reported this week in Greater Noida, 18 miles southeast of the capital New Delhi.

Nine Nigerians were attacked, including five who were wounded and two who were hospitalized with undisclosed injuries, said Abike Dabiri, Nigeria's special assistant on foreign affairs and diaspora.

Additionally, a Kenyan woman in her twenties was admitted to hospital Wednesday after she was attacked while getting out of a cab, according to Dharmendra Singh, a senior police superintendent in Noida.

The woman was released from hospital the same day.

Mob attacks

Police said the violence began over the weekend, following the death of a teenager in an alleged drug overdose.

His family filed a police report against five local Nigerian men, who have since been detained on suspicion of drug peddling, abduction and murder, police said.

A postmortem, however, did not confirm the theory of a drug overdose and the men were later released.

Following their arrest, African students gathered to peacefully demonstrate for their release, said Ezeugo Nnamdi Lawrence, university coordinator with the Association of African Students in India (AASI).

On Monday, a counterprotest by Indians turned violent. Police officer Amir Dikshit said about 500 to 600 people attacked two students in a shopping mall in Noida.

NEW DELHI: A Kenyan woman was attacked Wednesday, Indian police said, in the same northern city where a mob had assaulted African students following the death of a local teenager from a suspected drug overdose.

The woman was allegedly dragged out of a taxi and repeatedly slapped and kicked by unknown assailants as she returned to her home in Greater Noida, a satellite city outside India’s capital New Delhi.

“She has lodged a formal complaint and alleged that four to five men attacked her. We have launched an investigation,” senior police officer Sujata Singh told AFP.

The 25-year-old student suffered bruising from the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment, Singh said.

The incident came as police stepped up security in the city’s sprawling suburbs where mobs on Monday attacked a group of Africans with sticks and metal chairs.

Police have arrested five people over the assault but are still looking for at least four others and have set up security checkpoints and increased patrols as part of the manhunt.

Video footage showed an angry mob hitting a car with sticks and kicking it, while another clip showed dozens of attackers hitting shoppers in a mall with metal chairs and garbage cans.

Hundreds of African students live in Greater Noida, where there are several popular universities, engineering colleges and other educational institutions.

The attack followed the death of a local 16-year-old from an apparent drug overdose on Sunday.

Police detained five Nigerian students in connection with the case after a group of local people went to their home and accused them of murder.

The students were later released after police failed to find any evidence against them.

But a crowd that had assembled for a candlelit vigil to demand justice for the teenager turned violent after spotting a group of Nigerians.

India’s foreign ministry condemned the incident as “deplorable” and assured the Nigerian high commissioner (ambassador) that all steps were being taken to protect their citizens in India.

1) These guys are not Indian cause they are Muslims.

Turned out to be FAKE STORY.

A Kenyan woman who claimed locals in Greater Noida assaulted her was depressed because of personal issues and fabricated the attack, an African student group said on Thursday, apologising for what they called a “cooked-up” story.

The remarks came minutes after Uttar Pradesh police said the Kenyan national – identified as Maria Burendi – had lied about the assault with electronic evidence and eye witness accounts tearing holes in her account. The woman, in her early 20s, had claimed five men pulled her out of a cab and thrashed her while she was on her way to a friend’s apartment in Greater Noida’s Omicron Society.

But police said on Thursday that her narrative was false.

We interrogated the driver and he revealed he dropped her safely at her drop location at Omicorn society in Greater Noida. GPS movement of car and payment slip of Ola cab driver show that car’s movement was not stopped during the journey. The lady has been lying,” said Dharmendra Singh, senior superintendent of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar.

Representatives from the Nigerian Students’ Welfare Association apologised soon after for the incident that grabbed headlines because of a spate of attacks against Africans in the area, starting last Sunday.
