Africa: India Plans Big for Africa
INDIA plans to set up 80 capacity-building institutions in African countries as part of an action plan for enhanced cooperation with the continent. The Asian giant also intends to build six institutes of excellence.
India and more than 40 African countries represented by their Heads of Mission in New Delhi, with officials from the African Union, adopted an action plan for enhanced cooperation at the weekend.
This is with the renewed India-Africa Partnership, being dubbed, a "new paradigm" of South-South cooperation. Zambia's High Commissioner to India Patrick Tembo was in attendance and described India as a true ally in development.
This is contained in a statement released yesterday by First Secretary for Press, Bwalya Nondo in New Delhi. India and African countries adopted the Plan of Action of the Enhanced Framework for Cooperation ahead of the India Africa Forum Summit scheduled for next year in New Delhi.
The India Africa Forum Summit is held every three years. The first was held in 2008, followed by one in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in 2011. Addressing the gathering, Sudhir Vyas, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, said India was focusing on capacity-building in Africa that is "non-intrusive" and sensitive to the needs African partner countries.
Projects expected to be implemented under the framework include food processing clusters, textile clusters, a centre for medium range weather forecast, and a university for Life & Earth sciences in agriculture and civil aviation.
India is also expected to establish entrepreneurship centres that would focus on food processing, Information Technology, and renewable energy, among other fields.
Jean-Baptiste Natama, chief of staff at the AU Commission in Addis Ababa, praised India's commitment to Africa's development agenda which came without any strings attached.
