Afghans demand early repatriation - Newspaper - DAWN.COM

PESHAWAR: The Afghan refugees opposed to the two-year extension in their stay in Pakistan on Friday announced both Islamabad and Kabul to seek a permanent solution to their problems otherwise they will stage a procession from Peshawar to Kabul.

They insisted the Afghan government used their issue to collect funds from donors but did nothing for their welfare.

Chairman of Afghan refugees’ shura Baryalay Miankhel, Afghan Students Federation president Ibrahim Zazai and Afghan elders told reporters at the Peshawar Press Club that democracy had been restored in Afghanistan for 14 years and that Afghan rulers had collected funds in the name of refugees but did nothing for their wellbeing.

They said the Afghan government was least bothered about the rehabilitation of refugees and that its wrong policies were creating problems for them.

The Afghans said the government of Pakistan should announce scholarships for the refugee children as they were born and grew up in Pakistan, which was their second home.

They appreciated Pakistan and its people for extending generous support to them during the last over three decades.

The Afghans said Kabul was bound to devise effective strategy for the rehabilitation of refugees so that they could return to their homeland honourably and start normal life in their respective localities.

They said being neighbour of Afghanistan, Pakistan had done a great job by accommodating them, providing them with basic facilities of life and enabling them to earn livelihood for families.

The Afghans said there was a democratically-elected government in Afghanistan, which had the responsibility to serve its people with zeal, bring them back from abroad and provide them with jobs and other basic facilities of life.

They feared if the Afghan government did not take appropriate steps for the rehabilitation of refugees on immediate basis, the new generation of Afghans would grow up uneducated and would be unable to face future challenges.
