MARDAN: At least 35 Afghan and local prayer leaders were arrested by the law enforcement agency and security forces in the district here on Saturday.

It was learnt that law enforcement agency and security forces started an operation in Mardan and arrested some 35 clerics in various areas of the district.

On Friday late night security forces searched Kohi Burmaol area and arrested two prayer leaders identified as Maulana Sultan Ghani Arif and Maulana Aziz Chitrali. They are believed to be accomplices of militants. Both the arrested persons are locals.

According to officials, both the prayer leaders opened firing on the security forces when they tried to apprehend them.

An official of the armed forces identified as Hawaldar Salim received a bullet in his leg during exchange of fire.

However both the prayer leaders were arrested by the security forces and were taken to some unknown place for interrogation.

Security forces also apprehended four suspected persons near Punjab Regiment Centre. The City, Sadar and Hoti police stations also apprehended some 28 prayer leaders, most of them Afghans, from various mosques.

Here is the Inside Story.

An older post of mine(Just for reference):
http://www.defence.pk/forums/466531-post6.html

Please note that the following is not classified information and i heard about the events from my relatives.

Well i have just heard from my relatives that the son of Sultan Ghani was a wanted man in Shangla. He was involved in militant activities.Sultan Ghani was also an extremist himself.

Maulana Aziz Chitrali had been living in our village for 13 years and he also had links with militants. Dollars were confiscated from him. He was apprehended and forced to call another militant leader to meet him as that guy was a bigger target.People never knew that Maulana Aziz Chitrali was a taliban sympathizer.

2-3 MI agents from an intelligence battalion were operating there as street vendors for days and when the mullahs were arrested, the agents calmly boarded the army vehicles. The people were shocked as they did not know that the street vendors were from the army.

Unfortunately another agent got a heck of a beating when he was caught in the fields(he was doing recce).People thought that he was a taliban militant.

Over all a successful mission however, there is some misreporting about the firing but i won't correct it for various reasons.

Cheers.

Prayer leaders in remote areas are the main resons for terrorism to nourish there. I remember a report rather article in which it was mentioned that in Swat, Malakand, during Op. Rah-e-Rast, prayer leader was apprehended who was there in the mosque for some years and the security forces found him to be a Hindu. A RAW agent and this was not the only case.

People think and listen to these people with attentiion and they misuse their sacred positions.

According to officials, both the prayer leaders opened firing on the security forces when they tried to apprehend them.

This shows that they were not innocent, thts why they fired at the forces.

An official of the armed forces identified as Hawaldar Salim received a bullet in his leg during exchange of fire.

I pray for this JCO to recover quickly. May God help him and us. I persoanlly think that if proved guilty these men should be hanged publicaly for they are not themselves terrorists and criminals but developers of criminal mentality among the other innocent people who think it Islamic to do what is strongly condemned in Islam.

The crack downs on unregistered Madrassas is also an emerging controversy. Forces have seized many foregin students and teachers from these Madrassas. I personally think that such unregistered Madrassas should be banned.

fazllulah was also a prayer leader and look what happened. there are many such imams in mardan villages who openly criticize govt and support taliban or militancy. for the last four to five years LeT also organized itself there esp in Rustam area where followers of Maulana Abdul Salam have become lashkar men. but i am afraid nothing happens to them.

What are you talking about? Arresting these idiots before they become a major threat is the need of the hour.

Ignore him, there is no use talking to him.

Coming back to the topic. The people in my village are quite happy about the recent developments.

I am a die hard anti mullah. Poets that I consider my gurus are Allama Iqbal and Hafiz Shirazi. Iqbal says “Deen –e mullah saraasar fassad”. Hafiz puts it more succinctly when he states.

Sharaab haraam shumaarand wa khoon-e-khalq halaal
Zehey tareeqat wa millat, zehey shareeat wa deen.

Meaning they (mullahs) declare wine haraam but shedding of peoples blood halaal. Wah wah religious way and the nationhood, wah wah sharia and mazhab.

Wah wah is an exclamation of praise but here used in a cynical sense.

Hafiz describes my feelings to wards mullahs to perfection.

Halaal means lawful or legal as opposed to Haraam which means forbidden. Here the poet means to say that you forbid drinking of wine whereas shedding of blood in considered lawful.

Blood and red wine are often compared as 'drinks'. An old Indian film song stated 'main sharaab peeta hoon, tum logaun ka khoon peetey ho'. That I only drink wine but you drink people's blood.

My friend from Mardan too attests that almost all prayer leaders in his district are Afghan nationals, even though some of them may be living in the area for over 20 years. Also according to him, maulviiaan in villages play the game played by european clergy in the past, at a smaller level. That's probably some of them get ambitions of government and fancy the millitant route to it.

Well the latest news from there is that Sultan Ghani and many other guys that were captured from my village and other nearby villages like Bazderah have died .

The chitrali maulvi also died a few weeks ago while in captivity (he was a very old too). His dead body was received a few weeks ago.

The body of Sultan Ghani came back 1-2 days ago.

Are people being killed while in captivity?
