In summary:
  1. Helmand has been handed back to a Taliban sympathetic governor -- huh ?? when did that happen
  2. Senior UN official says transforming the economy could take up to 20 years -- so much for predictions of a quick fix
  3. Poppy cultivation is booming.
I have to say 2014 has started on a rather gloomy note for Afghanistan .

Podcast and commentary here, excerpts below:

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Williams, a former commander of the Special Air Service, is reported as saying this will leave Britain in an “uncomfortable position”.

“People will say: We’ve lost nearly 500 guys, most of those were in Helmand and at the end of it all we have handed Helmand back to a Taliban-sympathetic governor and Musa Qala and Sangin are full of guys with black beards and black turbans. What’s it all about?”

...

The outgoing head of the UN’s Office on Drugs and Crime Jean-Luc Lemahieu has warned that transforming Afghanistan’s corrupt economy could take up to 20 years.

...

Lemahieu is reported as saying opium production is increasing to compensate for uncertainty over the country’s future and declining international money flows.

Already in Iraq, some reports suggest AQ have influence or control of two Iraqi cities after US withdrawal but Iraqi army is set to launch a operation against those cities. Similar situation can certainly happen in Afghanistan where Taliban capture several provinces throughout the country.
