Officials said the air corridor between Afghanistan and China has been the key demand of the pine nut exporters.
The Office of the Senior Advisor to the President in Banking and Finance on Wednesday said Afghanistan and China have begun their discussions over opening of an air corridor between the two countries.
The talks will be finalized in the near future, said Sameer Rasa, head of the Public Relations Office of the Senior Advisor to the President in Banking and Finance.
“We continue our efforts to establish an air corridor with China,” Rasa said.
Afghanistan has so far launched air corridors with India, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. The first air corridor was launched with India last year in June.
Officials from Afghanistan-China Trade Council said to increase the country’s exports to Chinese markets, there is a need to pave the way for standard processing and packing of products besides the air corridor.
Afghanistan's trade with China, like many other countries, is reliant on imports.
China remains a big market for Afghan pine nuts, but the dry fruit is not among the export items of Afghanistan despite having a 97 percent tariff reductions by China.
“The raw materials including saffron and others which are found in Afghanistan like semi-precious stones will be exported to China,” said Seyam Pesarlai, spokesman for Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
Lack of standard processing and packing facilities and quality license for Afghan pine nuts are key problems for export of the dry fruit to world markets including china, according to the Afghan-China Trade Council.
“International institutes should help us in quality test and processing of Afghan products especially the pine nuts so that we can export our goods in an international level,” said Nasim Malakzai, head of Afghanistan-China Trade Council.
Afghan analysts said the air corridor is the only route which will transit Afghanistan’s products directly to the Chinse markets. Afghanistan was connected to China through railway two years ago, but the route is used only for import purposes.
Based on statistics of Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries, a large amount of Afghanistan’s pine nuts is smuggled to Pakistan and then exported to China markets after being processed in Pakistani factories.
