Afghan woman living in Pakistan dreams of becoming dental surgeon

PESHAWAR: Tamanna Amin was nervous when she stepped into her college on the first day of her BSc studies four years ago. She was, after all, the only woman in her class, and on top of that, an Afghan refugee. But, driven and persistent, Amin did not let that faze her.

She had been a brilliant student since school and soon enough was acing all her classes in college. The 23-year-old recently completed her last semester notching the top slot in her class at the Hafeez Institute of Medical Sciences in Peshawar. She received a 4.0 GPA when her result was declared this March.

Amin dreams of becoming a dental surgeon so that she can help the people of war-ravaged Afghanistan, but lacks the financial resources to continue studying and pursue a doctorate in dental surgery.

Plight of Afghan refugees

In Urdu, Tamanna means desire and Amin says that since she cannot afford to study further, her desire to serve her people can only be fulfilled with the help of non-profit or social welfare organisations willing to bear the cost of further education and help her succeed.

“I was the only female student in my [BSc] class and was hesitant about competing with my male classmates. But I worked hard and got the highest marks,” says Amin. “I believe I can do even better in the future.”

Amin and her family have seen tough times as refugees having to settle in a foreign land but those hardships have not dimmed her spirit. The family migrated to Pakistan in 1992 from Wardak province in Afghanistan and rented a room in Hayatabad, Peshawar. But tragedy struck in 2007 when Tamanna’s father died and she and her four siblings were still young. To keep the family afloat, she began working at a dental clinic in 2011 which she continued alongside her studies. Amin is the sole earner in the house.

Government resumes scholarship programme for Afghan students

Despite financial hardship and social constraints, the importance of education was not lost on Amin’s mother Nooria Siddiqui who struggled to ensure her children were educated by taking up several jobs including, stitching clothes, teaching and working with an NGO.

Several schools even expelled the children because they were unable to pay the fees consistently, recalls Siddique, who herself is a social sciences graduate.

“I am very proud of her [Tamanna]. Because of her hard work, she always topped her classes and is now working to support the family,” she says.

Future in peril: For most Afghan refugees, school is not an option

Siddique did criticise welfare organisations saying several Afghan refugee families were living in miserable conditions in the country but these bodies did not offer help. According to her, the UN refugee agency UNHCR initially supports families but stops after some time and even visits to their offices are of no avail. She urged the agency to help families because they did not even have money to pay for healthcare.

Amin had to cover the cost for the first two years of BSc. In 2015, she found out about the UNHCR-administered German Academic Refugee Initiative scholarship and applied for it. The scholarship funded the rest of her degree easing the family’s financial burden.

She is now working on her final thesis towards the completion of the degree and is appealing to social welfare organisations to help her continue further studies so she can fulfil her dream of becoming a surgeon.

Here is my analysis and i am going to compare with people living in the West.

When there is a terrorist attack by ISIS/Al-qaeda or any other "So called Islamic groups" people blame all Muslims to be terrorists and then we all jump on the bandwagon saying "But its not our fault" or "We had no hand in that" or " Not all Muslims are bad" or " Just because someone else committed a crime, please don't blame all of us". We also label the people in the West, as racist, bigots etc etc. But when the same thing happens in Pakistan we start pointing fingers just like the West, we discriminate, we label all of them "Haram Khors" "Terrorists" etc etc.

So my question is, Are we ourselves setting a good example? Are we not being racists or bigots? if so then why do we expect others to not discriminate against us all?

In my opinion, yes we need to find and sort out the bad ones from the good ones, but please don't discriminate against a poor girl who had nothing to do with the policies of the Afghan government, who just wants to follow her dream and become a dental surgeon.

I would like to hear your views on this, do you think i am wrong in my assessment?

Bhai i will bring you 1000 proofs that unfortunately 99/100 afghans residing in pakistan hate pakistan. One of my friend working in a factory in karachi told me that his colleague who is afghani refugee and recieve monthly 78000 PKR , recieved a letter to return to afghanistan in 8 months. He was always filled with hatred towards every pakistani working in that factory and even used to bark out words against Pakistan. I was in Meena bazar , azizabad , in a shop of cloths where i was buying colths for my mom , an afghani shopkeeper was playing rude with me , I respectfully asked him to talk politely but he didnt under stand my words. Then i also burst out my anger and created a scene , insulted him , told him " We keep you here which is not our responsibility , you enjoy more than our own poor people , we give you scholarships , free lands , homes , food and even security. And yet you haramkhors bark back on us. After creating the mess , some nearby shopkeepers came to the scene , stooped the fight , one of them told me that this man lacks politeness. Leave him alone. I have also seen Pro Pakistan and Pro Pakarmy afghanis too and believe me they are angels

SO summarising up , kick her too

She need to go back to Afghanistan ASAP. OR people like her need to stand up and tell their GOV to shut the hell up.

I have seen Afghan people living in Pakistan, say things which no one like to say to their hosts..
Majority of them are liars and hate Pakistan who kept them alive and provided for them in difficult times...

Infect, i have given 4 Afghan's working in my company in Pakistan to security agencies as they should not be in our country anymore..

We cannot help afghan's as we used to be doing from last 30 years, when we found our kids blood on their hands...

its as simple as that...
