Afghan wants 150 Battle tanks and 1 Squadron of Attack choppers from India

Afghanistan few months ago had given a wish list of Military equipment which it wanted from India to face Taliban post American- NATO withdraws from Afghanistan post 2014; idrw.org had hinted that Afghanistan had requested Attack choppers but other request for equipment were never revealed until now.

According to latest media reports Afghanistan have requested 150 upgraded T-72 with its ammunitions and have also requested to hand over soon to be retired Mi-35 Hind attack choppers from Indian air force to them.

Idrw.org spoke to sources in Army and they have hinted that old T-72 in Army storage (war Reserve) can be overhauled and upgraded and can be handed over to Afghanistan if Indian government clears such request but he refused to provide further information. Indian army has 2000 fleet of T-72M and T-72M1 of which older ones are in war reserve , Few hundred have been upgraded with Better engine and Modern weaponry .

Other Requests includes one An-32 Medium Transport aircraft from current IAF fleet, 120 (105 mm) field guns along with large number of 82 mm mortar rounds. List also includes 2 Dozen Mil-17 transport helicopters.

Afghanistan have also requested Military Trucks and Military Grade jeeps, and Training for their men in handling these machines in India. It is likely that Government of India will clear request for Military trucks and Jeeps and even light arms and ammunition but there seems to be a divide weather to clear other Heavy War Machinery like Battle tanks and Field guns, Indian Military planners are in favor of transfers of Battle tanks and Field guns but Government is divided, they clearly don’t want to upset Pakistan.

Idrw.org spoke to Defense analyst who said that Afghans have prepared their wish list keeping in mind their need and Soviet equipment’s which India already possesses and can provide to them , Ball is clearly in India’s court now , and it will be interesting to see if Indian Government bites the Bullet and Provides Equipment’s to Afghans .

.
I'm asking an open question, not making a case for transferring heavy equipment, but why should we care if pakistan decides to be b*tthurt if we transfer heavy equipment to Afghanistan, a sovereign nation?

Doesn't Pakistan buy heavy war machines from other countries and even sell nuclear technology to other countries without so much as publishing a white paper on it?

So the point I'm making is that our decision should be based on our own interests, NOT what an unreasonable junta ruled state like pakistan thinks.

that shount be a problem with india as it gives us a situation of hitting two birds with a single stone ...go india go give them that

. . .
GoI should fund the weapon purchase for ANA covertly. Direct weapon transfer would annoy some of the nation including Iran.

.
Don't bring religion into this .... And FYI India has gud relations with almost all the Muslim nations except for one ....
another one whom we helped in Independence. rest all are kinda neutralish with India except Afghanistan...correct me if iam wrong.

1) 150 Battle Tanks - means a slightly understrength Tank Division or more appropriately two brigades. Along with the helicopter forces, I think they are looking for some mobile fire brigade of sorts.

2) This is in direct opposition to the current area domination doctrine that ANA follows today. The policy is moving to Search and Destroy.

3) The pre-requisite for this is better and solid intel. It can be safely deduced that the ANA has now got a good espionage network in place.

4) This also means that they have got a working fuel program with Iran worked out.(Especially now with the threat of the blockade from the East)

@Dillinger - This thread has a good potential to be an engaging one. At the same time the word Afghanistan is a troll magnet. Any updates on how the chassis can be modified for a lighter and faster vehicle as opposed to the heavier 'i' variant that India uses?

Should not really be a problem although some may cry hoarse. It is in India's (& in larger context everybody's) interest that Taliban be kept in control so that Afghanistan can effectively start a re-building of the nation which is war ravaged since the days Soviets walked into the country. Building up of an effective army is therefore fully justified.
The country now has a democratically elected government and has all rights to take whatever steps it thinks is in its national interest.
India wants some foot hold in Afghanistan (mining, infra-projects etc) and therefore should consider the request keeping in mind long term relations (which have been good) and ramifications for the regional security.
We must be happy that Afghan govt has put good faith in India for its security requirements and therefore we should not back off and show solidarity with Afghan people and their government.

That's because Pakistan thinks that Afghanistan is Pakistan's own property, its protectorate, a State of Pakistan. So according to it, India has no business transferring any warlike equipment that may hurt Pakistani interests.

Secondly, it says they have requested for 82 mm mortars. We don't have any! What we have are 81mm mortars! :p:

Pakistan can think what they want, they are an unreasonable state with concoted history and delusions about their importance. But the article claims that Indians take cognizance of their issues, my point is, we should not.

India will definitely give arms to them but it will be discreet transfer i guess or there is also a strong possibility that US might have agreed on this too
