Afghan Officials Say More Than 20 Taliban Fighters Killed In East

Officials in Afghanistan say more than 20 Taliban militants have been killed in security operations in the country's east.

The largest operation took place in Wardak Province, west of Kabul, where Afghan National Army soldiers killed 16 Taliban and confiscated weapons, cars, and motorcycles belonging to the militia.

A spokesman for the Wardak governor said four additional Taliban were killed in a smaller police operation in the province.

In nearby Laghman Province, a government official said two militants were killed in a gunbattle with the Afghan intelligence service.

Ten members of the Afghan security forces were killed in the operations, including three national police killed at a checkpoint attack in Nangahar Province.

The fighting comes as a top Afghan general, Mohammad Sharif Yaftali, said insurgent activity is on the rise in Afghanistan's eastern provinces.

Karzai should proove that he is capable of protecting its people from extrimists. Only then something can happen. So far he has not be successfull.

: A roadside bomb seriously wounded a prominent member of Afghanistan's High Peace Council on Sunday, an official said, while the government announced that recent fighting in the country has killed 14 Afghan soldiers and 64 Taliban militants. Fazil Ahmad, the High Peace Council's chief in Ghazni province, was in critical condition in a hospital with three others, who had been travelling with him, when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb, said deputy provincial police chief Asadullah Ensafi. The car's driver was killed.

Dear Dash,

This news above proves that Afghanistan has come a long way since the Taliban rule. There is no reason for us to feel pessimistic and not think optimistically in regards to its future. Afghanistan continues to take steps towards a safe and secure future. At the same time, ANSF continue to prove that the hard work is paying off. They are fast gaining the capability to counter threats that have plagued the nation in the past. We are working closely with the Afghan government and addressing any issues that continue to arise. We’ve overcome many obstacles in the region, and we will remain committed to achieving our shared peace objectives. We echo what Secretary of State, John Kerry, said recently: “We have not invested in this, all of us together for all of these years, in order to invite failure as we begin to do the very thing we sought to do, which is stand up the Afghan military and capacity and provide a transition. We’re in the middle of that now. This is the first fighting season as the Afghans take the lead, and thus far they’re doing pretty well. So we need to finish this in a way that does honor to the sacrifices and the efforts of a lot of countries for the last 11, 12 years, and I’m convinced we will.”

US killed probably hundreds of taliban and yet they are still there so i don't think people should celebrate small victories as there is always a huge backlash in response to these attacks.

Dear Sir,

I am sure you would be watching for that day eagerly and we will be as Indians too. It remains to be seen how the scenario unfolds in coming times and what course the transition will take. Well for it to be a positive one, being optimistic is the first step. I agree.

Regards,
Dash

I must say that ANA and ANP are doing very well. They are killing 800-900 talibans every month. talibans are no different than other terrorists. ANA is literally slaughtering them like sheep.
PS: this time situation is different in Afganistan than soviet era. Soviets couldn't support Afganistan after their withdrawl and then ANA was merely a 90K force while now ANA and ANP count more than 350K and most importantly America is gonna support them economically till 2024.
