TTP chief Hakeemullah Mehsud was killed in US drone strike on November 1 and there was un-official mourning by Pakistani leaders for their enemy number one. The son of Jalal Haqqani of Haqqani Network and as associate was gunned down in Bhara Kahu suburbs of Pakistan’s capital Islamabad and there was a mysterious silence. He was also a financier for the network. There was no word from any quarter nor did anyone accept the responsibility of his assassination except a strong message of condemnation from the Afghan Taliban.
This assassination may affect Pak-US relations as it has blasted the cover of Pakistan’s clandestine relations with the network. Americans have all along been accusing Pakistan of sheltering members of the Network which Pakistan has all along denied. This episode has left everyone speechless and numb including the pro-Taliban parties who do not spare any such event with condemning the Americans.
The question is; have the Americans taken him out to prove that they have been right about Pakistan sheltering the Taliban of Afghan variety? It is not clear as yet but whosoever has done it wanted Pak-US relations to hit the rock bottom once again after Salala incident of November, 2011. It could be India, or anti-Pakistan TTP or NDS, the Afghan Intelligence outfit.
According to media reports, unidentified gunmen gunned down Nasiruddin Haqqani as he bought bread on the edge of Islamabad on Sunday evening. There was no immediate claim made but given the style of assassination, some analysts believe that NDS might have got the job done through their proxy in Pakistan, Tehreek-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). However, NDS spokesperson totally denied the allegation of its involvement in this murder.
On the other hand, TTP, whose stated mission is the destruction of the Pakistani state, accused Pakistan's own intelligence agency of killing Mr. Haqqani, and vowed retribution. This is laughable as TTP and Haqqanis, or Afghan Taliban are miles apart and have fundamentally diverging objectives. While Afghan Taliban are considered close to Pakistani establishment, anti-Pakistan TTP has strong backing of NDS and by extension, of Indian RAW. Both operate side-by-side in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region. Junior Haqqani could have no other enemy in Pakistan. In spite of its desire to hit the Network, Americans are unlikely to have executed Haqqani.
