An attack near the Indian consulate in the Afghan city of Jalalabad has left five militants dead, including a suicide bomber whose device killed only himself, police have told the BBC.

They say the gunmen were shot dead by the security forces soon after the bomber detonated his device.

Medics told the BBC that at least nine people were injured. Consular officials said none of their staff were hurt.

Jalalabad is often targeted by Taliban militants.

A suicide bomber killed at least 13 people in the city in January.

That attack took place at the home of a prominent local politician who backed President Ashraf Ghani's peace talks.

It took place a few days after a gun battle near the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad in which at least seven Afghan security personnel were killed.

Jalalabad is the capital of Nangarhar province, where two districts are controlled, or at least influenced, by the Islamic State group - a rival of the Taliban.

In the violence on Wednesday, police say a bomb in a car driven by one of the attackers was detonated near the Indian consulate, destroying other cars and shattering doors and windows.

In the aftermath there was a gun battle between gunmen accompanying the bomber and security forces, witnesses said. So far no group has claimed the attack.

The Afghan government has been locked in a bloody conflict with Taliban militants for more than a decade.

The Taliban have launched several high-profile attacks in recent months. The army recently said the militants were on the verge of capturing the key district of Sangin in Helmand province.

On Wednesday at least 25 people were killed in two suicide attacks in the capital Kabul and in the eastern province of Kunar.

In September, the Taliban briefly overran the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, in one of their biggest victories since they were ousted from power in 2001.

Hats off to the Afghan security forces for quickly resolving the situation. Hope they continue performing just as well in other parts of Afghanistan and bring some much needed security and stability to the region.

Afghanistan should trace their identiy and source of training and support.
We need to name and shame their supporters.

There is no reason why these scum will not attack the Pakistani consulate, something we have seen before. We must be careful whenever thinking of Afghan Taliban as some type of righteous allies and friends. Their allies the TTP have destroyed everything Pakistan is and blind supporters of Qadri are refusing to allow Pakistan to progress as a Islamically secular united country.

Islamically secular is a oxymoron

Islamically secular is a oxymoron
You need to read about Muta'zilites and Ibn Rushd if you think the 2 are unrelated. Islamic secularism is the policy of our ancesters and of the 4 righteous caliphs, one who refused to pray in a christian church in case it would be converted into a mosque as such a venerated companion of the Prophet visited it and another who ruled against his own self in his court where a jew had stolen a shield.

Those who believe Islamic society is incapable of being secular do not understand the strength of our religion is righteous conversion caused by treatment of minorities or in that time majority zoroastrians and pagans that was very well.

Secularism means separation of State & Religion. What you are proposing is a fusion of State & religion.

Actually I will agree with @haviZsultan on this one when he mentions the Mutazilite and how Prophet Mohammad when he migrated to Medina laid a foundation of a society which is in a complete obtuse to what we have these days.

I recommend a book by Reza Aslan, no god but God where he talks how the separation of state and religion functioned in the early and authentic islamic traditions.
