The Afghan and Pakistani security forces exchanged fire in Spin Boldak district located close to Durand Line, the local officials said.

The incident took place late on Thursday after the Afghan border guards opened fire on a number of militants who were trying to enter the district from the other side of the line.

Provincial police spokesman Zia Durani confirmed that a border policeman lost his life and two others were wounded during the clash.

He said the Pakistani border guards opened fire on the Afghan police forces after the militants came under fire.

According to Durani, the militants and Pakistani militia forces have likely suffered casualties during the clash but there are no reports regarding the number.

The militant groups and Pakistani authorities have not commented regarding the incident to so far.

Incidents involving cross-border attacks mainly by the militants are not rare as the porous areas along the Durand Line are normally frequented by the Afghan militants as well as the foreign insurgents including the Pakistani Taliban insurgents.

The Afghan and Pakistani forces have also clashed for numerous times along the Durand Line last year, mainly in eastern and southern provinces.

The Pakistani security officials claim a soldier died after sustaining injuries from firing along the Durand Line.

Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of Pakistani military, in a statement said the incident took place on Saturday close to Khyber Agency.

“Terrorists fired from across on a Pakistani post in Khyber Agency critically injuring Sepoy Waqas performing duty at the border post,” the statement said.

The statement further added “Terrorists are resorting to fire from across the border, taking advantage of weak border control on Afghanistan side.”

“There is a requirement to check terrorists’ freedom of movement on the Afghan side of the border,” the statement added.

No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident so far.

The porous Durand Line is considered as the main transit route for the militants commuting between the two countries.

A clash broke out between the Afghan and Pakistani border guards few days ago which resulted into the death of an Afghan border policeman.

According to the local officials in Kandahar, the Afghan forces prevented a group of insurgents to enter Spin Boldak which resulted into firing from the Pakistani border guards.

The officials further added that the clash between the two sides for almost two hours.

At least 20 loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group were killed in a premature bomb explosion in southern Zabul province of Afghanistan. Local official said late Monday that the incident took place on Sunday evening in Arghandab district.

At least 19 militants were killed during clashes with the Afghan security forces in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan.

The provincial government media office in a statement said the Taliban militants launched a coordinated attack on security posts in Sangin district late on Monday.

The statement further added that the attack was repulsed by the Afghan forces, leaving 19 dead and around 24 others wounded.

According to the local officials, additional forces of the Afghan National Army (ANA) commando were deployed to Sangin late on Monday night and the security situation has further improvement with the deployment of the forces.

No further details were given regarding the possible casualties of the Afghan security forces during the clashes.

The Taliban militants group has not commented regarding the clashes so far.

Helmand is among the volatile provinces in southern Afghanistan where the Taliban insurgents are actively operating in a number of its districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

This comes as reports emerged during the recent months suggesting that some of the Taliban’s senior leaders have shifted to Helmand as they attempt to seize further parts of the province.

At least two civilians were killed in artillery shelling from the other side of Durand Line in eastern Kunar province of Afghanistan.

According to the local security officials, the incident took place late on Thursday night after dozens of artillery shells were fired on Sarkano district.

Provincial police spokesman Faridullah Dehqan said the shelling started at around 10:00 pm local time and continued for several hours.

He said one of the rockets landed on a residential house in Sarkano district, leaving two members of a family dead.

According to Dehqan, a woman and his 15-year-old son were among those killed in the shelling.

The shelling started hours after a deadly explosion ripped through a shrine in Sindh province of Pakistan and shortly after the military of Pakistan closed the routes connecting the two countries along the Durand Line.

The incident at Sehwan city of Sindh took place on Thursday evening as hundreds of people had gathered for a ritual.

According to the Pakistani government officials, at least 70 people, including women and children were killed in the attack.

The officials further added that nearly 150 others were also wounded in the attack and the health condition of the majority of them has been reported as critical.

The Afghan National Army Chief of Staff General Qadam Shah Shaheem has said Pakistani has not taken any step regarding the evidences and documents submitted by Afghanistan so far.

Gen. Shaheem said Afghanistan will review the list of terrorists submitted by Pakistan, alleging that 76 terrorists are operating in their safe havens in Afghan soil.

He said further evidence and documents will be requested from Pakistan if needed, emphasizing that Pakistan has so far failed to respond to the evidence and documents submitted regarding the terror groups operating in Pakistani soil against Afghanistan.

Gen. Shaheem further added that Afghanistan welcomes to receive documents and evidences regarding any terrorist group and reiterated that the Afghan security forces will never allow the terror groups to use the Afghan soil against the other countries.

This comes as the Pakistani military summoned a number of the Afghan embassy officials on Friday and handed over a list of at least 76 terrorists which they claim are having sanctuaries in Afghanistan.

Earlier, the Pakistani military announced that the routes linking the two countries along the Durand Line have been closed after the attacks.

Gen. Ghafoor said “Pakistan-Afghanistan Border closed with immediate effects till further orders due to security reasons.”

The steps by Pakistan were taken following a series of deadly attacks including a suicide attack on a shrine in Sindh province that left over 70 people dead and scores of others wounded.

Amid reports that Pakistan has moved heavy artillery towards the Afghan border, army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa on Monday said “enhanced security arrangements” in the border region were aimed at combating terrorism.

After a string of terror attacks in the country, Pakistan Army has moved heavy artillery towards the Afghan border in Chaman and Torkham districts, the Express Tribune reported, citing security officials.

The move came just two days after the military targeted the camps of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) Jamaatul Ahrar (JA) faction on the Torkham border opposite Mohmand and Khyber tribal regions.

Pakistan alleges that the group, which claims to be behind the recent wave of terrorist attacks, has found “safe haven” in Afghanistan.

Gen. Bajwa said security measures along the border with Afghanistan were part of efforts to defeat terrorism which is a common threat to both countries.

Army spokesperson Asif Ghafoor said Gen. Bajwa chaired a security meeting at the army’s headquarters in Rawalpindi.

In a clear response to a recent move by Pakistan, the Afghan government on Monday handed over to Islamabad a list of 32 terrorist training centers and 85 top militants allegedly based in Pakistan.

Relations between the two Muslim nations are at an all-time low following a string of terrorist attacks in Pakistan last week that claimed close to 100 lives, and were staged by militants allegedly hiding in Afghanistan.

Frontier crossings between the two neighbors have been closed since Thursday amid on-and-off cross-border shelling and the security forces being on high alert.

In a statement released on Monday, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the intelligence list had been handed to the Pakistani envoy, and actions against the targets sought.

Details were not shared with the media.

Additional forces have been deployed to eastern Nangarhar province following heavy artillery shelling from the other side of Durand Line.

The provincial officials in Nangarhar said the forces were deployed to Goshta and Lalpur districts in a bid to prevent the shelling.

Provincial governor Gulab Mangal said the additional ground forces and artillery units were deployed after the conclusion of the military council meeting.

He said the Afghan forces have the right to respond to further aggressions.

Mangal further added that the deployment of Quick Reaction Forces to Lalpur district was also decided during the meeting.

This comes as the local security officials said Sunday that the Afghan forces are ready to respond to the aggression once they receive orders from the central government.

The officials further added that hundreds of rounds of artillery and mortar shells were fired on Lalpur forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate the area.

The artillery shelling started hours after a deadly attack ripped through a shrine in Sindh province of Pakistan, leaving scores of people dead and dozens of others wounded.

The Pakistani Taliban group’s Jamaat-ul-Ahraar claimed responsibility behind the attack.

According to reports, Pakistan has authorized its military to carry out operations against the militants in Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s finance minister Ishaq Dar has reportedly informed the Pakistani Senate that the authorization was granted after evidences were received regarding the use of Afghan soil in recent attacks in Pakistan, according to VOA’s Afghanistan service.

This comes as the Afghan authorities said earlier this week additional forces have been deployed to two districts of Nangarahr province which came under heavy artillery shelling from the other side Durand Line.


During a meeting of the provincial military council, the local security officials in Nangarhar said the Afghan forces are fully prepared to respond to any aggression, waiting for the command from the central government.

In the meantime, the Pakistani army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa earlier instructed its forces to establish better coordination with the Afghan forces to fight terrorism.

He said “COAS directed for more effective border coordination and cooperation with the Afghan Security Forces to prevent cross border movement of terrorists including all types of illegal movement.”


“COAS also welcomed recent proposals from Afghan authorities to take forward the mutual coordination or result oriented efforts against terrorism,” he added.

Tensions between the two sides intensified after a series of deadly attacks across Pakistan, including a deadly attack on a shrine in Sind province last week.

The Pakistani officials claimed that the attacks were plotted and coordinated from the Afghan soil but the Afghan authorities said they will investigate regarding the list provided by the Pakistani authorities and in return handed over a comprehensive list of Taliban and Haqqani network leaders and sanctuaries to the Pakistani officials.

The Pakistani Ambassador to Afghanistan was summoned in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan regarding the persistent artillery shelling in eastern provinces of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said Ambassador Syed Abrar Hussain was summoned and a protest was lodged by deputy foreign minister for administrative affair Dr. Nasir Ahmad Andisha.

Dr. Andisha strongly condemned the artillery shelling on Sarkano district of Kunar and Goshta district of Nangarhar which resulted into blaze in a jungle in Shangari area of Sarkano.

He sought clarifications from the Pakistani envoy regarding the shelling that resulted into displacement of hundreds of people.

Another protest was also lodged regarding the military activities across the Durand Line and the harassment of Afghans by the Pakistani authorities, calling for an immediate release of the detained Afghans in Pakistan.

In his turn, Ambassador Hussain said the recent military activities along Durand Line were aimed at curbing the terrorists activities and vowed to forward the concerns of the Afghan government to the relevant authorities in Pakistan.

This comes as the local officials in Kunar said Sunday that the artillery shelling resumed late on Saturday days after it was halted.

The officials further added that the shelling has not resulted into casualties of the local residents but hundreds of people were forced to flee their homes.

The former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said Afghanistan will not recognize Durand Line as a formal border between Afghanistan and Pakistan as he reacted towards Pakistan’s move to close the transit and travel routes between the two countries.

“The Govt of Pakistan has no legal authority to dictate terms on the Durand line.while we wish freedom for the people of #FATA from FCR and other repressive measures, we remind the Govt of #Pakistan that #Afghanistan hasn’t and will not recognize the #Durand line.” Karzai said in a Twitter post.

The closure of the routes by Pakistan has resulted into growing tensions between Kabul and Islamabad.

The Pakistani authorities decided to close the routes following a series of attacks last month which led to the death of scores of people while hundreds of others were wounded.

The attacks resulted into escalation of tensions between the officials of the two countries as the top diplomats were summoned both by Islamabad and Kabul regarding the presence of the alleged terrorists sanctuaries on the soils of the two countries.

Islamabad handed over a list of at least 76 terrorists demanding Kabul to take actions against them which they alleged are involved in a series of attacks using the Afghan soil.

However, the Afghan officials are saying that the leadership councils of both the Taliban and Haqqani terrorist network are based in key cities of Pakistan and in response to Islamabad’s list handed over a list of 85 top Taliban and Haqqani terrorist networks leaders along with a list of their sanctuaries.
