Aamir Khan-starrer Secret Superstar may not have done spectacularly well in India, but the film appears to have a created a box office record for an Indian film in China.
The film starring starring Aamir and Zaira Wasim has collected more than Rs 100 crore in just two days. Bollywood trade analyst, Taran Adarsh, wrote on Twitter that Secret Superstar had crossed in two days in China what the film could do in its ‘lifetime biz’ in India.
Adarsh wrote, “#SecretSuperstar continues its dominance with an EXTRAORDINARY Day 2 [Sat] in China… Hits ₹ 100 cr mark… Crosses India *lifetime biz* in 2 days flat… Expect an equally POWER-PACKED Day 3 [Sun]…
Fri $ 6.86 mn
Sat $ 10.45 mn
Total : $ 17.31 million [₹ 110.52 cr]”
His next tweet said, “#SecretSuperstar enjoys INCREDIBLE audience rating on Chinese movie ticket and fan rating sites, which explains the IMPRESSIVE footfalls at multiplexes there… Surprisingly, the audience rating is higher than #Dangal, which grossed approx $ 200 mn in China.”
The success of Secret Superstar in China perhaps emanates from the cult status that Aamir has acquired in China post Dangal release. The film on Phogat sisters’ incredible success in wrestling had smashed many box office records in India. Dangal had also won many hearts even in China including President Xi Jinping, who publicly confessed how he had become a fan of Aamir.
Jinping’s comments had come after the Indian government did not find Dangal good enough for the National Awards. Jinping had told none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he watched Aamir Khan- starrer sports drama Bollywood film Dangal and liked it.
Dangal had raked up more than Rs 1100 crore in China. It had become only the 33rd film in China to cross a whopping collection of one billion yuan (USD 147 million). It had also become the first top-grossing non- Hollywood film in China.
