Aafia can return if Pakistan signs deal on prisoners swap

ISLAMABAD: The US contacted the Government of Pakistan a number of times for the repatriation of Dr Aafia Siddiqui to the country, but never received any response, US diplomatic sources said.
The sources said Dr Aafia could be repatriated if Pakistan signed the international prisoners agreement for exchange of the neuroscientist.

According to a private TV channel, the US diplomatic sources said the Government of Pakistan was contacted after the jury’s verdict in February 2010 that the repatriation of Dr Aafia to Pakistan was possible, if Pakistan signed the world agreement for prisoners exchange. “Pakistan did not respond to resolve the issue,” they added.

It is worth mentioning that a US delegate that had arrived in Pakistan for the strategic dialogue in July had also indicated that Dr Aafia could be repatriated to Pakistan. The sources said if Dr Aafia was not repatriated in the future, the Government of Pakistan would be responsible for it.

When contacted, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said the government had made best efforts to get Dr Aafia back from the US detention. “The Foreign Office is responsible for signing any agreement regarding the exchange of prisoners,” he added.

This would be beneficial if the terms are laid down.

If cases are open in Pakistan we should get the person no matter how high profile he/she is for example getting all our runaway politicians.

We need a deal with UK too.

This deal shouldn't be blindly done with Aafia in mind, but all aspects should be taken into consideration.

. . .
Zardari, Musharraf, Rehman Malik, Shaukat Aziz...

All potential inmates in Pakistani jails.

 they arent Americans isnt it.

We have to properly study this exchange deal. We don't want any real criminals against the state being rescued by conflicting American interests.

Agreed. I am still looking for any solid reason why US is going to make this bargain ???????

Are they trying to blackmail Pakistan for accessing to some high profile people ?? knowing well that we might refuse and thus once again US will be able to decrease the level of criticism against it in Afia case and all the mud will be thrown on us??

This is strange that US is trying to cash the mode over Afia in Pakistan

.
why would pakistan want this woman back? perhaps general public opinion has put pressure on teh authorities?

why not ??? the trial was shame and one sided . the verdict is a big blot on the face of US justice system.

rest US does have the right to probe her links but the trial on the basis of all the injustice/barbarism done by US army to her at Bagram Prison is against all norms of justice

.
pakistan has no guts to allege US with the unfair trial??

she is a pakistani and she must be tried but in a justified way and not in a peoples court..
