For a country facing insurgency and militancy, its defence and security forces place orders for only 90,000 5.56mm assault rifles out of a total of 164,000 small and personnel arms a year. This the average yearly production of its ordnance factories.

According to information given to the Indian parliament by Minister of State for Defence, Mr MM Pallam Raju, the production is largely from three state owned factories, Rifle Factory Ishapore, Small Arms Factory Kanpur and Ordnance Factory Tiruchirapalli.

Interestingly, there are no private companies manufacturing personnel weapons for military and security forces in India.

India imports an unspecified of assault weapons, especially AK-47 rifles and other specialized weapons such as for sniper use.

According to Gunpolicy.org, a U.S. based website tracking small arms all over the world, India military forces have 5.7 million personnel weapons.

INSAS assault rifles are considered to be somewhat "heavy", probably thats why not too many of them are ordered.

most of the weapons held by Kurramwals never really leave their chests except when required........

actually, I posted a video back of a Russian (rather former soviet) belt fed anti aircraft machine gun.

it was gifted to my uncle who was a medic for the allied backed mujahideen. Still works! :)

Oh! No wonder, you have terrorists roaming around everywhere.

So many weapons in the hands of villagers is now creating problems for your army in the ongoing WOT.

Upper Kurram is largely free of said militants........your argument holds little sway

according to the article your fellow countrymen posted, it appears hindustan is dealing also with an armed insurgency......naxals et. al

one require army to safeguard borders and police to guard interiors. assault rifles to civilians is a sure shot recipe for undermining govt control in that area.

a lot of native Bangash and Turri tribesmen are in the FC, Scouts (KM) & Army.........FYI

anyways, i wont delve in this further. Carry on.

We should increase the production and the new assault weapon with night vision and thermal imaging, which should replace the INSAS of army and para military. The old INSAS should got the police forces who still uses WW1 .303 infield.
