This effort was developed under the Office of Secretary of Defense Rapid Prototyping Programs.

This capability was demonstrated a few years back during exercise Dawn Blitz 2017 when USS Anchorage hosted a HIMARS launcher which hit a floating target 43 miles away using a GMLRS rocket, foreshadowing US forays into ASBM capabilities.

During RIMPAC 2018 USS Racine (LST-1191) was engaged by shore launched HIMARS rockets from 63 miles away, demonstrating the extended range of the new Tail-Guided GMLRS rocket with a range of +90 miles.

USS Racine was hit not only with HIMARS rockets but also Japanese Type 12 AShMs, Naval Strike Missiles of the US Army, several Harpoon missiles and was finished off with a MK48 torpedo.

This is what a GMLRS rocket looks like when it hits a ship.

The accuracy of the new tail-controlled GMLRS rockets is insane! They hit near vertically within inches, not meters, of their target.

lol while certain members were mocking Iranian ASBMs, looks like their god, the US also is building them.
