Nine in ten Indian students in the US who participated in the largest known and most comprehensive study yet of the community’s future plans are keen to return to India to pursue their careers. As many as 84% of those planning to return to India are interested in jobs combining research and teaching, the study found, in findings with major implications for policy makers here grappling with a crippling faculty shortage. Most of them however said they would not accept a pure teaching job.

The study, conducted by researchers from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Pennsylvania State University and Rutgers University is the largest effort yet to look at diverse aspects of future plans of Indian students in the US and factors driving their decisions. The study was released in the US today.

“The high percentage of those open to returning and their interest in higher education careers presents a big opportunity for India,” TISS political science professor and study co-author Venkatesh Kumar told HT. Kumar’s co-author is David Finegold, Dean of the Rutgers School of Management and Labour Relations. The authors plan to make the study – the largest and most diverse they know of – an annual effort.

Out of 998 respondents who agreed to participate in the study, 76% said they were planning to return to India, were in the process of returning or had just returned. Another 16% said they would go wherever they received the best job, regardless of the location. Only 8% student respondents said they would definitely prefer to stay back in the US.

About half the respondents – 54% -- said they are keen to return to India but after working for a few years in the US. “Another key finding was the high fraction of students who said they wanted to give something back to Indian higher education,” said Kumar, currently a Herbert Humphrey Fellow at Pennsylvania State University.

The researchers used regression analysis to distinguish trends based on the qualification students were pursing, their academic stream, age, sex, marital status and presence of children. They also studied reasons why the students left India for American higher education.

The Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Management, central, state and deemed universities across India face a faculty crunch that has left the country with one of the world’s worst higher education student-teacher ratios in the world.

I have been in the US for 20+ years and 92% of Indians want to stay here. Hindustan times editors do not live in the US and are way off on this article. A very small percentage who get laid off go back, if they cannot find another job.

Most Indians want to get a green card but they wouldn't prefer getting a citizenship. It also depends on the type of immigrants and which part of India they come from.

I can't comment about students in USA, but I came back from Europe to settle down in India.

The difference in standard of living isn't that much, and it's obviously better to live amongst your family and friends

Good. This is 1 aspect I am jealous of India in, they hold onto their overseas talent better than we do. We have much to learn from India in this aspect.

I would be happy if China is able to keep Chinese students who are studying in China.

Yes, that is the overall best strategy, but we also must try to attract as many "real chinese" back as possible, instead of fake actors that worship the Dalai Lama and treat citizenship as a joke.

^^^ actually the situation has become lil better post economic crises. many indians came back during the crises to find india was relatively unaffected. i think that helped a lot.

we need people to come back and contribute in economic and technological development. for example one of my friend was working in boeing company. he was given optioon to work on lesser pay. he refused and came back to india. here he joined Mahindra defence systems at the same pay level and is happy abt his decision.

Count me in guys.... I have been thinking of moving back to India for a few years now... finally jumping on the boat in July this year! Every thing is planned out and I am excited.

Luckily for me during my stay here in the US I have been able to open up a branch office in my home town and employing 20 guys. I love the team and it was them who accelerated my decision. Good to read that students are also interested in moving back. I personally know several guys who have moved back... reverse brain drain is true :D

:pop: Oh, Indians all are the patriots, they do not want to stay in the USA.

It has nothing to do with patriotism..indians working in USA are also patriots...

This has to do with the rise in economic opportunities in India. That is the reason indians are coming back, because they believe they will get equal opportunities if not better in india for their USA degree.

You are right... there are plenty of really good opportunities in India and above all considering the purchasing power parity, a lot of people in India can think of similar salaries as they get outside.
