A Buddhist temple, believed to be built in the 12th century during the Pala period, has been unearthed in Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari.

A team from the Department of Archaeology excavated the temple on a reserved archaeological site in Dharmapalagarh area, named after the 2nd Dharma Pala who had established his capital there.

Mujibur Rahman, leader of the seven-member team that has been working since January 1, said the upper portion of the temple was destroyed and some parts of its basement were still buried.

He said they discovered several broken parts of clay pots, white marble slabs with motifs and a wall with overly burnt large bricks around the structure.

The length of the wall is 25 metres while the thickness 0.85 metres.

Also, the main structure of the temple is encircled by a 1.2-metre wide passage on which devotees used to walk as part of their rituals, said Mujibur, also the custodian of Mahasthangarh Museum in Bogra.

He said his team along with 20 workers arrived in January as part of an annual excavation programme of the government.

In 1987, the government declared Dharmapalagarh with some 30 acres of land and its surrounding Moynamotir Kot, shrine of Kherkathi Pir and Satisher Danga, a nearby place, a reserved archaeological site realising its historical importance, he added.

Assistant Custodian of Mahasthangarh Museum SM Hasanat Bin Islam, another team member, said the bricks found in the temple seemed similar to that of Mahasthangarh.

Asked about the historical background of Dharmapalagarh, Abu Sayed Inam Tanvirul, custodian of Rangpur museum, and another team member, said British archaeologist Dr Fransis Bukanon visited the area during 1807-08.

In the following years, he prepared a map to draw the attention of the government and historians to the site.

In 1876, another British national, Major Renel, made a thorough survey of the area and wrote down the findings on a book, paving the way for future excavation, said Tanvirul.

Golam Mostofa, lawmaker from Nilphamari-3 constituency, said,“ In the ongoing parliament session, I had asked the government to undertake a project for the extensive excavation in the area as the archaeological evidences of Dharmapalagarh may contribute to the study of history.”

Thousands of people are visiting the newly excavated temple every day while additional members of police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order

Nothing unusal here.People of East Bengal were predominantly Buddhist a thousand years ago.Buddhism survived here long after it wiped out from other part of sub continent. That's why all the archeological site discovered here are Buddhist monument.Later those Buddhist converted to Islam but Hindus were not. That's why East Bengal became Muslim but West Bengal remain Hindus.

If it is Buddhist temple we should preserve it. There are plenty other indian assets to be destroyed.

What do you want with the Hindu temples? Destroy them? Is not it that all the historical monuments on our soil are BD assets? These are not Indian assets. Indian assets are those that lie in India. However, we have a common history until 1947.

jai hanuman.
Now face the wrath of Monkey God.
Im happy that despite being a jamaati you have the decency of seeing the light. How is it that a group of terrorists - ie. Jamaatis will accept you now. You would probably be physically hurt by them for this.

.
Why people should disrespect other religions and insult their followers? God has not given such a mandate to the follower group of any religion.

You ain't anyone to call a Bangladeshi jamati or not. Just because one doesn't agree with you. My friend your think all AL supporters like India? Some of your really gullible.lmao
No. There are AL supporters who donot like India. But they are Nationalists.

There is a difference between the above - and Those who wish to destroy people of other religions in Bangladesh and make Bangladesh a slave of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. This category is called Razakars. And every single Jamaati falls in this category and atleast half of BNP members.

West Bengal will not last as Hindu Majority. Muslims will be majority one day then we can alert our mujahdeens/Jihadis to demand merging with Bangladesh and moving away from Hindutva-India and bring back West Bengal to Bangladesh where it belongs. :D
As for the Hindus there, they'll either will have to remain or move to other states.

Mate Pakistan is miles away, Saudi is even long miles away. No one wants to be the slave of anyone. Bangladesh is an independent country. Just because some BD muslims might get along with Muslims from Pakistan doesn't mean we are slaves, it's called muslim brotherhoodship. Some Hindu Bdeshis might like India for being Hindu majority, Hindu nation. It doesn't mean they are slaves of India. Let's not think like that. I do agree most of Jamatis have their own versions of how to make BD, but like any parties have their own ideas nothing wrong in one thinking their own ways but it's not like Jamat ever will be majority, LoL. BD being muslim majority, I as a proud Muslim Bengali Bangladeshi, don't like Jamatis ideas because it won't work in BD, as it always been quite moderate/secular and Islamically there's no compulsion in religion and Jamatis do seem extreme. Most BD muslims don't support/like Jamat, if they did then Jamat would've least been in power alone least once, which they never have.

Ok, so there is a general misconception among the outspoken minorities in Bangladesh that, it was a Hindu land before and gradually they are minority now. But no one can spot a Hindu temple more than 1000 year old. How come this? Buddhist monasteries here can date back to as old as 3rd century BC. All old Hindu temples found are during decline of Buddhists in Bengal and rise of Hindu Sena in 11th century and decline of Muslims in 18th century.

Pala Dynasty was already been replaced by the Sena Dynasty in mid 11th Century. How come this temple was built in 12th Century when the anti-Buddhist Senas were ruling the country? Senas destroyed Buddhism. Vijay Sena of Sena Dynasty was the ruler at that time. So, if it is really a Buddhist temple, it was certainly built during the Pala period, may be sometime before 11th Century. However, if it was really built in the 12th Century, it is supposed to be a Hindu temple.
