TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A total of 147,387 Vietnamese worked overseas in 2019, with about 80,000, or 54 percent, working in Japan, while 54,480, or 37 percent, worked in Taiwan, CNA reported on Tuesday (Jan. 7).

This was the highest number of migrant workers from Vietnam in six years, surpassing the Vietnamese labor authority’s goal of 120,000 for 2019. The Vietnamese government sees its overseas workers as part of a national policy to eliminate poverty and acquire wealth, the CNA report said.

Currently 650,000 Vietnamese migrant workers are working in 40 countries, according to the Vietnam labor authority report. Furthermore, 2019 was the fourth consecutive year that Vietnam saw more than 120,000 overseas workers in a year, the report said.

Taiwan welcomed the most Vietnamese workers in the past, but this changed after Japan opened up to foreign labor.

It's sad and a disappointing government failure if jobs and a sustainable way of life cannot be provided by a country's government to its people. Which at the end leaves them with no option but to migrate.

Don’t need to blame the government.
People in East Germany go to West to find jobs. Not necessarily bad when Vietnamese go to Japan and Taiwan to have higher paid jobs.

Yes and it is not that high when you compare to countries like BD and Pakistan that have millions working as like salves in Gulf.
Japan and Taiwan will be much more civilised than Gulf Kingdoms in the way they treat foreign workers.

Japan is said to pay a minimum wage of $1,000 per month. How’s in the gulf states?

Hard working, long hours, in a brutal hot environment. That’s not much!

Yep and also get treated like a sub-human by idiots who happened to get rich just by accident of being born over oil and gas.

BD is now making a massive focus on SEZs(Special Economic Zones) where both local and foreign companies are able to set up factories and other industrial units in order to provide jobs for BD'shis. The government hopes that when these units are complete in 10 years there will be decently-paid jobs for 10 million people and that should mean that no unskilled person from BD should ever have the indignity of working in the Gulf.

Check out one already set up by local company Meghna:

https://www.meghnagroup.biz/miez.php

This already employs 10,000 people. This is just one of 100 that will be in operation by 2030.

Notice that both BD and foreign companies are involved as BD does not want too much domination of BD economy by foreign companies.

True, the lucky Arabs, I admire their richness too, however sometimes I want to give them a kick into their face.
After the wars we in Vietnam were living in dirts. Not a joke. Working hard helps everywhere.

All the best to Bangladesh!

BD and Vietnam had to start economic development in 1971 and 1975 respectively and that is why we are so poor now(2000 for BD and 3000 US dollars per capita for Vietnam).

We both are the fastest growing large economies in the world at 8% and 7% a year respectively.

Our time will come in the next 10-20 years.

Unfortunately the war did not stop in 1975. two another wars (Canbodia, China) followed. US economic sanction stopped in 1995, arms embargo in 2016. Without these events, our Gdp would be double or triple today.

Anyway that is a thing of the past, we move on. right, next 10 and 20 years will be interesting as hardships were overcome, we left them behind.

Most Vietnamese perceive deveoped countries too positively. One lives very comfortably in Vietnam with far lower amount of wages.

Minimum $400 per month is ok, if lower then surviving in big cities in Vietnam is difficult if you have to feed a family.

Most Indonesian young family have both husband and wife working so they usually have double of that figure. The grandma will look after the kids. Primary Education is also free in Indonesia for public schools.

Only men with having good salary who forbid their wife to work just like happening with my two older brothers. But some men allow his wife to work despite having enough salary just like my youngest sister husband, my sister work as a cardiologist and his husband as Jakarta civil servant.

My oldest brother wife then make a business. Building homes in Jakarta. I think there are also many like her, mostly I think doing online business.
