Bhilwara: An 80-year-old woman in Rajasthan was allegedly paraded naked on a donkey on the orders of the Khap Panchayat.

The woman alleges she was first labelled a witch who would eat up the children of the village and then she was stripped, black paint was smeared on her face and she was then paraded naked on a donkey.

The incident happened in the Chauhanon Ki Kameri village in the Bhilwara district last week.

The khap also allegedly ordered the entire village to ostracize the woman, threatening to impose a Rs. 1 lakh fine on anyone who so much as speaks to her.

The woman's husband died 37 years ago, and she has no children. She says some people in the village want to grab her small piece of land, and had been harassing her for a while.
Just a month ago, a similar incident took place in south Rajasthan when 50-year-old woman in Rajsamand was allegedly paraded naked on a donkey on the orders of a self-styled village court that decided that she was guilty of killing her husband's cousin.

The Rajasthan High court had ordered action against such community panchayats but in large parts of rural Rajasthan, their diktats are law.

Khap Panchayats, which are all-male unelected village bodies, are notorious for issuing extra-judicial diktats and even ordering honour killings in parts of rural India, especially in northern states, but they enjoy such political influence that local politicians rarely speak out against them, no matter what their parties say.

Rajasthan: Khap Panchayat makes education mandatory for girls

....In a village in Rajasthan's Barmer, a rare order by one such Panchayat, 20 years ago, came as a blessing for girls.

The Panchayat made it mandatory for everyone to send their daughters to school or face a penalty. The girls are now all grown up.

Barmer is known for its poor gender ratio, but right in the middle of the district, a government school stands out. The girls there outnumber the boys.

"People in other villages here generally don't educate girls, but in this school, girls come from two to three kms away regularly. Their parents don't send them to the fields for work or just keep them engaged in the household work, so the girls are keen on studying and the parents take a lot of interest in their education," Kamla said.

Till 1991, only boys studied in the school. Then, the local Khap Panchayat made it mandatory for everyone to send their daughters to school or pay a penalty of Rs 1,000. No one in the village has violated the order so far.

Kirta Ram, a resident of the village, said, "After they announced a penalty of Rs 1,000, everyone started sending their daughters to school. The girls began doing well in their studies, now our girls are constables, teachers and nurses."

20 years back on a bright day, a Khap Panchayat issued an unlikely diktat that changed forever how the little girls in the village would grow up and live. 20 years later the result is there for everyone to see.

Harkhu Devi is proud of her daughter Panni, who is a constable with Hadi Rani Battalion posted in Jodhpur. She now wants all the girls in her extended family go to school.

"We were never sent to school, we did cattle grazing, but now I want to educate all the children and grandchildren, the girls just as much the boys," Harkhu Devi said.

The Barmer region is the hotbed of female infanticide. But this school is the oasis of change that has given hope to thousands of girl children to study and be that change.

Why did they smear black paint on her face?

Why did they smear black paint on her face?

It appears to be a land grab attempt from a poor old lady without any family.

Blackening of face is an attempt at shaming the person. Its an old cultural practice when the person is found guilty of any crime.

the racism of south asia... black coloring means "evil"... white worship, essentially.

there is an old saying here... "buri nazar waale, tera mooh kaala"... meaning "oh you of the evil eye, may your face become black/dark".

 Is that why Hindu's wear white during Funerals ? :cheesy:

that is a strange logic... don't westerners wear black during funerals... does it mean they are demeaning black people??

so why isn't shaming in south asia done with white coloring?? or orange coloring??

i myself have seen in bangalore... a college-type fellow on the cosmopolitan "brigade road" calling a passing black african lady as "kaali".

. .
We also wear white clothing during Chinese funerals.

so do south asian muslims... doesn't mean they are demeaning caucasian types... strange logic of prajapati... however it is in-keeping with his thinking because he posted a "happy news" in favor of these anti-human "khap panchayats", without considering the evils that these "village elders councils" have created since 1947.

Well you have detailed all the good points, but you didn,t mentioned why you did such loathed act to that old lady.. It mean that you people have proved that you are not respecting women. in case of malala india was trying to malign our reputation in the world for disgracing women race but now you are debunking your own acts against women... e.g.2: women rape.

LOL. Why should I care why westerns wear black ? .......... you are the one making absurd claims.

Of course, IF you were a Hindu or had any link with your roots you would have know your own culture better :P

Black is the color of night, a time when most evil take place. Its a time of fear. That is why in ALL culture black is associated with "evil" as in "dark magic", "witches", "black death", etc..

In Hinduism (and hence in India) time is split into 30 Muhurta. Of which the Yama Muhurta is the worst time and which falls in the night. Which is Also why no auspicious activities NEVER take place in the night.

The face is painted black to publicly associate the "criminal" with Evil so that everybody associates that person with evil and avoids him/her.

An act of evil cannot wash away an act of good.

Indian Army has killed innocent civilians in kashmir, but they have also saved countless civilians in kashmir and shed their own blood for doing so.

As I said, this appears to be a clear case of Land Grabbing due to Greed. There is nothing religious or culture or social about it.
