PARACHINAR:
Six Shia Muslims, including four teachers and two lower staff were killed in a shooting at a school in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram district on Thursday in what appeared to be retaliation for an attack shortly before in which a Sunni Muslim teacher was shot dead, officials said.

Both incidents occurred in the Parachinar area near the border with Afghanistan, they said. The area is off limits to journalists and human rights activists, which makes it difficult to verify facts independently.

The teachers, who were at the school to perform examination duties, were inside the staffroom when unknown assailants opened fire on them. An emergency has been imposed in all hospitals of the area by the authorities.

The attackers are said to be still at large.

Contradictory accounts were given by regional authorities about the motive for the killings.

A statement from the provincial chief minister's office said it involved a property dispute, but the regional commissioner said sectarian antagonism appeared to be the cause.

The teacher killed in the first incident was a Sunni Muslim while those shot in the second attack at the school were Shias, the deputy commissioner, Saiful Islam, told Reuters.

"It is not clear whether the second incident was a reaction to the first one," he said, adding security has been heightened in an area already tense due to sectarian violence.

The tribal district has a majority Shia population who are often attacked by militant groups from the local Taliban movement.

Local police said they were gathering more information as they investigated the incidents.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the incident and expressed grief over the loss of lives in the deadly shooting.

In a statement, he condoled with the bereaved families and prayed to Almighty Allah for raising of ranks of the deceased in heaven. He also prayed for the early recovery of the injured and ordered provision of all possible medical assistance to the wounded.

The prime minister sought a report of the incident from the officials concerned.

Board examinations have been deferred for an indefinite period in Parachinar for now, announced the chairperson of Kohat’s education board, Samina Altaf. “The students inside the examination centre remained safe,” she said.

The chairperson further informed that board examinations in the rest of Kurram district and areas will be held as per schedule.

Pakistan’s tribal regions have long served as safe havens for terrorists. Proximity with Afghanistan, which has been wracked by a long deadly civil war, has made the tribal regions a potpourri of militants who frequently use the porous border between the two countries to sneak in and out to mount attacks in the two countries.

This tribal belt was the birthplace of the TTP, the umbrella of terrorist groups responsible for most militant violence in the country. Proximity with the tribal regions also rendered K-P vulnerable to TTP attacks.

Four days ago, tens of thousands of people took to the streets to protest against the ever-deteriorating law and order situation in Lakki Marwat district of K-P.

A large number of local residents including political workers of all parties, civil society, lawyers and students participated in the protest.

The call for protest was given by Olasi Pasawon Lakki Marwat after terrorists attacked a local college where the army was camped.

At least 7 killed in firing incidents in KP’s Kurram: police

At least seven people were killed in separate incidents of firing in the Upper Kurram area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram district on Thursday, police said.

Upper Kurram District Police Officer Muhammad Imran told Dawn.com that the first shooting incident took place at Shalozan Road and the second at Teri Mengal School — which a Dawn.com correspondent present in the area said was at a distance of six kilometres from Shalozan Road.

However, Kurram district headquarters hospital deputy medical superintendent Qaisar Abbas put the collective death toll at eight, saying that seven “teachers” were killed in the school shooting.

Police have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Condemnations

PPP co-chairperson and former president Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attacks, terming the “killing of on-duty teachers” an act of “terrorism”.

A statement shared on the PPP’s official Twitter quoted him as saying that the perpetrators of the attack should be taken to task.

He offered prayers for the deceased and extended condolences to the bereaved.

Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Sajid Hussain Turi, Shia organisation Anjuman-i-Hussainia’s secretary Inayat Hussain and Syed Tajammul Hussain, president of Shia organisation Tehreek-i-Hussaini, also condemned the incidents.

Rising terrorism

In recent months, Pakistan has been hit by a wave of terrorism, mostly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November.

According to a report, January 2023 was the deadliest month since 2018, in which 134 people lost their lives — a 139 per cent spike — and 254 received injuries in at least 44 militant attacks across the country.

Most recently, militants targeted security forces in three overnight attacks in the Lakki Marwat district, triggering shoot-outs in which three soldiers were martyred and seven militants were killed.

The bloodshed came days after the military declared a new offensive against militants amid a resurgence of attacks in recent months, including a Peshawar mosque bombing that killed over 100 people in February.

At least seven people, including some teachers, have been shot dead at a school in Pakistan's north-western Kurram district, authorities say.

Multiple gunmen were involved in the incident, police have said, which occurred in the staffroom of Government High School Tari Mangal.

This shooting is thought to have been linked to another earlier in the day, when a man was shot in his car in the district, officials say.

The suspects remain on the loose.

The details about exactly what happened at the school in Kurram district - a rural area that borders Afghanistan - are still unclear and police have not identified any clear motive.
According to officials, a man was shot and killed in his car in Kurram district this morning. He was believed to be a member of the same school.

In retaliation, a group surrounded a school in the small town of Tari Mangal, they say.
At least seven people were killed at the school, at least four of them teachers, and two of them attendants. The police were also attacked and three were injured. The bodies of the dead have not yet been recovered.

Sir this is hardly to anything with establishment..

I am of firm opinion that this area will always be violent prone....
Kuch to baat hai iss mitti mein

re-educational camps are the only thing that can save those areas.

Right from Mughal Empire to British to Soviets to Americans..no one has been able to fully control this piece of land....

This area should be isolated for all practical purposes...

Why is our country facing all these issues? We really need to start holding people in power accountable, these duffers have enjoyed too much freedom.

Only in Pakistan, Authoruties give these absurd statements "These teachers were shias and were probably killed in reaction to a teacher assasination of a sunni teacher"
Duub ke mar jao Aesi statement detey huey publically as a first reaction wo bhi DC level ka officer.
Lakh di Lanat.

It's a fight between tribes, typical of the area. The teachers themselves were shooting each other.

People of tribal districts are very backwards. The whole area was a no go no warzone for centuries, until the state tried to establish some sense of civilization in there post 2018 after realizing what a huge security risk it is.

Just tribals being tribals

It's in their nature,, always causing problems

But you know 'stet mek afghan pashtu pashtu'

Wish the stet would come down on them and make them into human beings
