In a shocking incident that has sparked outrage, a 74-year-old critically ill man in Tamil Nadu's Salem district was rescued on Tuesday from a freezer box. His family allegedly was waiting for him to die after he was discharged from a hospital, and he was made to lie overnight in the box, used to store bodies.

The man was found alive by an executive on Tuesday when he came to take back the freezer box, which had been taken by the 74-year-old's brother from an agency. The executive raised an alarm and tried to arrange help, officials said.

A disturbing video shows the 74-year old man gasping for breath inside the box. The man - identified as Balasubramania Kumar - has been admitted to a hospital.

Officials probing the incident said the 74-year-old man was recently discharged from a hospital in a critical condition. However, his brother had asked for a freezer box as he allegedly waited for him to die.

An executive of the agency - that gave the family the freezer box - raised an alarm seeing the man alive, leading to the man's rescue.

Deivalingam, an advocate who provides free vehicles to carry bodies, also rushed to the man's home, hearing about the incident. "The man was kept inside the whole night. The agency executive got panicked and alerted me. I was told by the family - 'The spirit has not left and we are waiting'.

A police officer told NDTV: "A case of negligent conduct and endangering life has been registered. We are investigating".

The old man retired from a private company as a store keeper, according to the police. He lives with his widower brother and a niece who is differently-abled.

In this case it was a parent who was victim of cruelty but in many other cases the children are victims of parental cruelty and apathy, hence cases of honor killing, student suicide, professional suicide or a miserable life of forcing oneself to being in a job while their heart lies in some other activity.

There is no country that can be termed perfect, also morality has been created by humans as a survival mechanism.
There is no morality in animal kingdom, it’s a dog eat dog world there. Hence if survival is not under threat then we return back to our animal roots.

I agree, bad things happen elsewhere too. This article is about a Japanese man who kept his father's dead body at home for three years so as to keep receiving the pension. Japan seems to be not really advanced after all.

But in India bad things go to extreme levels.

You used the correct phrase : "dog eat dog". India is full of dogs hence the extreme disparity because people have internalized the attributes of the dog : cruelty, noisy and chaotic.

It would have been a different situation if India was full of cats. Please watch this vid where a cat is trying to revive a dead cat. On the whole, cats are wise and gentle. These attributes are what we should seek to internalize.

sadly in poor families this is more than usual. It's not always greed or cruelty. With a differently abled niece to support, someone might have decided there is no money to further support the old man facing the end of his days. It's terrible. I just hope some fair consequence emerges.

It's not always greed. Sometimes there really is no money to support the parents and to fulful boligations (like the mentally afflicted girl in this case). Sometimes the people who wish the death are very decent people. Like this guy...remember him?

He is anand hangal...one of India's most famous character actors. Despite a stellar carrer he made just decent money. As he lived on to 95+, his medical costs became so high that his family was unable to bear it. One of the children was forced to say 'maybe he should just go now'. Only when that news broke out that the film fratenity finally rallied and gave them some help. Sometimes it's just too much to bear.
