Rs 3,500 cr for IISc branch at Chitradurga​

CHITRADURGA: The town of Chitradurga, hitherto known for its massive rock fort, is all set to rewrite its history in the field of advanced
science and technology including aero space research, informed Janardhana Swamy, Lok Sabha member from Chitradurga on Friday.

An alumnus of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, Swamy, who interacted with a couple of officers from IISc and Chitradurga DC Amlan Aditya Biswas earlier, said that chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has kept up his promise by sanctioning 1,500 acres of land in Challakere taluk for setting up of a branch for pursuing research in advanced technology, alternate energy from solar and wind sources, water resource technology, space collaboration etc.

A huge combined investment of Rs 3,500 crore is set aside for establishing a branch of IISc and a defense research development office (DRDO) within a period of three years, in the area adjacent to sheep breeding centre, at Khudapura (Challakere taluk), the MP disclosed. As many as 4,000 scientists including 3,000 researchers will be stationed in the vicinity. The state housing board has sought 300 acres of land for building houses, the DC, Amlan aditya Biswas disclosed. He also informed that DRDO was prepared to invest Rs 17 crore for getting 0.3 TMC of drinking water from Vani Vilasa Sagar, (from Challakere point). The Rs 110 crore drinking water project to Challakere town has been approved by the government, the DC added.

B K Subbaraman, registrar of IISc who handed over a cheque of Rs 4.5 crore (cost of land) to the DC on the occasion, recalled the generosity of Krishna raja Wadiyar IV, king of the then princely state of Mysore 100 years ago by sanctioning 400 acres of land in Bangalore city for setting up of the IISc.

btw there are roomers doing the rounds at IISc that this new campus may offer undergraduate programs too!

Establishing IISc's and IIT's in small towns which have poor connectivity have tough time in attracting best faculty and students. Already IITK and IITKgp loosing their faculty to other IITs. Hopefully these institutes revive the good old times in attracting the best students to core sciences.
