Wind to give 500-600 MW by 2007

ISLAMABAD (APP) - Underlining the vital link between energy security and growth momentum, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that government is looking for power generation from diverse sources including renewable energy and planning to produce 500 to 600 MW from wind energy by 2007.
The prime minister was talking to a delegation of companies involved in production of wind power.
The delegation included Mr Brian Fitzpatrick of AXOR, Canada and Rafiq Dawood, Chairman Wind Power, a Pakistani company.
The prime minister said the energy needs of the country were growing by eight to 12% annually, adding that energy security was critical to maintain growth and competitiveness in the rapidly globalized world.
The government is looking at diversified sources to bridge the impending gap between supply and demand, he added.
The prime minister said the government’s strategic direction for development of energy sector includes; enhancing exploitation of hydropower, energy generation through the use of gas and furnace oil, alternate energy resources (solar, wind and biomas) and nuclear energy resources.
Pakistan, the prime minister said, has vast scope of generating energy from wind because of its geographical location. Many parts of the country especially in Sindh lend themselves to obtaining energy from wind, he added.
The prime minister said the government was working to expedite development of alternate sources of energy to meet the growing demand of power on fast pace as well as to produce cheaper and environment friendly energy in the country.
He said the government has prioritised electrification of remote villages through wind and solar generating projects to provide cheaper electricity to the people of these areas and 500 to 600 MW wind power will be installed by 2007.
The delegation informed the prime minister that a consortium involving MS/AXOR of Canada and First Dawood Group would establish a 50 MW wind power project at Gharo, Sindh to meet the urgent needs for the power section in Pakistan. The project will be functional by summer, 2007.
Brian Fiztpatrick appreciated the investment friendly policies of the government and the cooperation extended by it in the implementation of the project.
The meeting was attended among others by Air Marshal (r) Shahid Hamid, Chairman, AEDB and senior officials.

They'll be all over Pakistan, starting in Balochistan.
Pakistan is looking into German and French turbines to build them locally.

That sounds good because it will ensure that the best technology is used. I have seen a few pictures of wind Turbines in India and they are so small, hopefully the turbines in Paksitan will be the modern huge ones that Europe is building.

We did a short feasability, last year and the cost per turbine/per MW was US$1.2m to US$1.5m. Maintenace cost was less than US$2000/MW

Wind energy, is clean, and extremly cheap. Given the current level of oil prices, we should invest more in it

Its a very encouraging news for Pakistan if followed seriousely i think it can solve energy problems to some extent while i think it should not put the gas pipeline with Iran also apart from exploring other areas for generating energy.

Thanks for the costanalyse Syed, I was looking for that.
Do you have a link to support the claim?

Thanks!:)
