Tourists visiting Imam Square - a key attraction of Iran's central city of Isfahan.

Iran says the number of tourists that visited the country last year increased by above 30 percent from a year earlier – what could be an indication that one of the world’s top travel destinations is already finding its lost flavor after the removal of sanctions.

A top trade official in Tehran told domestic media that Iran hosted over 6 million tourists over the last Persian calendar year that ended on 21 March 2017.

Ahmad Asqari Qajari, the director of the Tourism Department of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (TCCIM), said the figure showed an increase of above 2 million compared to a year earlier.

Asqari Qajari told Iran’s state news agency IRNA that Iran earned around $8 billion from tourism last year, stressing that the figure could increase even higher once the infrastructure for hosting a higher number of tourists were prepared.

Iran's southern city of Shiraz hosts the tomb of ancient Iranian poet Hafez - a venue frequently visited by the tourists.

The mosques around Isfahan's Imam Square are popular sites for tourists.
With over 20 special sites that have been registered on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Iran has been frequently named as a must-visit travel destination.

The country aspires to host 20 million tourists annually by 2025, with expectations of expanding the tourist sector to $30 billion.

Iranian authorities have already unveiled sweeping plans including easing visa restrictions as well as constructing new hotels as part of efforts to attract more foreign tourists.

What is believed to have helped to prepare the grounds for a higher number of tourists visiting the country has been the removal of sanctions against Iran in 2016 which facilitated direct flights specifically from European capitals.

. . .
how does it matter ?

It matters. Thousands of Shias across the world visits Shia holy sites based in Iran and Iraq. Else, Saudia Arab is the most , or among the most, visited country in the world if you consider annual Haj pilgrim in mind.

why comparing it with Saudi or any other country. If Iran is getting 6 millions tourist. its a good development. brings money and interaction.
Saudi Arbia because Haj pilgrim will obviously be on higher tourist count. l

:smitten:

I can't bear to see Iranians and Shias visit Iran :(
but why ? is it something personal or just age old Turkey-Iran rivalry.

.
One word.........Hate!

@ the turkish member saying most tourists are Iranians or Shias...

Buddy Iran has 21 UNESCO World Heritage sites. More than Turkey's 16, or any other Middle Eastern country. Its actually 11th highest in the whole world. Everyone including westerners love coming to and exploring Iran. No need to be jealous.

I'm pretty sure Istanbul has more landmarks than the whole of Iran and ME put together.
Istanbul alone gets more tourists than whole of Iran.
But yeah I am jealous and a ISIS member lol

Hopefully Iran and regional relations will improve and more folks from Pakistan can visit Iran and increase our bilateral understanding

There is no such thing as Sunni or Shia , main thing is your Worship allah and acknowledge the last prophet.

How folks view , individual Cliphs , is debatable and to me that is secondary. It is enough that all those first 4 Cliphs were companions of Prophet which is a great characteristics, beyond capacity of present age Muslims

Other differences are creation of Men and folks with Dynestic goals

We need to work together :pakistan:to improve regional ties with various Islamic countries in region

Iran deserves to get it's fair share of positive Tourist and acknowledge for being a peaceful regional country for past 30 years

Improvement of relations between
  • Turkey / iRAN
  • Pakistan / iRan
  • GCC / iRan
  • Egypt / iRan
Has to be reviewed on Emergency basis

  • No more Libya/Iraq or Syia chaos and mistake - thank you

Huh nice. I provide facts, you provide silly comeback. 21 UNESCO world heritage sites in Iran vs. 16 in Turkey. That is a fact. Another fact is all of Iran's world heritage sites were achieved by Iranians but same cannot be said for Turks...

And by your earlier logic, Istanbuls tourists are all Turks and Sunnis ;)

Lets not mention Roman, Greeks etc. Just the Ottomans alone left many landmarks. Palaces, Mosques, historic architecture , fountains, parks, bridges, Castles, Forts, Mansions lol

Istanbuls tourists are all Turks and Sunnis ;)

Nope, just Wahabbis:argh:
