54 Jets Set to Be Scrapped, Air Force Looks to Cannibalize on its Squadrons

The Rafale deal with France is yet to materialise, but the Indian Air Force is set to lose 54 fighter jets within the next six months. The planes - MiG 21s and MiG 27s, bought from Russia in the 60s and 70s - will be de-commissioned, bringing down the strength of the Air Force from 35 to 32 squadrons.

The Air Force - which needs at least 42 squadrons of 18 aircraft each to provide proper air cover at the Western and Northern borders - is now considering an unprecedented step to fill the gap, said sources.

The IAF has told the government that it could divert four to six planes from the existing squadrons - depending on requirement - to keep the total number of squadrons intact.

"We will have to pull out about 50 odd aircrafts from other squadrons and make up 3 squadrons," a senior Air Force officer told NDTV.

The flip side will be that it will reduce the operational strength and therefore the fire power of the squadrons.

The loss to each squadron at times could be more than six jets, since the fighters will sometimes be unavailable due to repairs and maintenance. The 18 fighters of a squadron include two trainers and two fighters in reserve.

"In effect, the number of fighters available at times for operational deployment will be even lower," the officer said.

MiG-21s are interceptor jets, used for air defence and air to ground attacks. MiG-27s are used for ground attack and a variety of purposes like destroying infrastructure.

But the Rafale jets -capable of deep penetration strike - that were to plug the critical gap are still far away. India has also scaled down the number of aircraft it planned to acquire from France from 126 to 36 off-the-shelf jets. Defence minister Manohar Parrikar had said they were "way too expensive".

And it will be another five years before indigenously built fighter jet Tejas can be deployed in a combat role.

"The IAF will fight with whatever we have, but the situation isn't a very happy one," a senior officer said.

I thought you guys got rid of MIG 21, 23 and 27s long time ago.

Mig-23s has been retired, others will probably stay in service till 2020-23

MMRCA winner was slated as replacement for not just MiG 21 but also in long term for Jaguars and MiG 27 (hence ground attack capabilities were given significant importance).
Now that Rafale numbers appear to have been reduced (atleast in near future) in view of quick induction of LCA, what will happen to A2G role platform?
MiG 27 might see retirement from 2018 onwards (Jaguars in their upgraded DARIN avatar will serve longer), but with AMCA still on drawing board, there could be shortfall in this area too and i'm not sure if Su 30 is an ideal solution to this case scenario.

LCA with Litening target pod is an able A2G platform, the only constraint for LCA is it's range, while it has a clear advantage over Mig-21s and Mig-27s in payload. As of present form, Tejas is more suited to replace Mig-21s as an interceptor, while Mk 2 with more range and powerful engine can be a true multirole aircraft.

Su-30MKI is a strike asset, it can be fielded as A2G platform, but that can be more effectively taken up Mirage 2000s or LCAs.

DM will put rough Bamboo in there a$$... He is clear that no more Shopping..

My suggestion is scrap IAF, Sack all top officers, and handover the Air wing decision to Indian Navy...

LOL. Its much better to make the IAF more responsible and define their budget and ask them to work within their budget.

We lack a centralized command structure, that gives independence for each arm to decide for their own. We need to emulate US Central Command for our armed forces.

Hasina Ji wants to manufacture combat aircraft in her vision 2021 goal. So India could look towards Hasina for future aircraft acquisition.

A loss of single aircraft means a hell of change in air defence tactics
yet 54 aircrafts here means trouble on ground table too.

Good news get rid of this junk even if total IAF squadron shrinks to 20.

People need to understand, that the aircrafts being retired are 33-36 years old,
Russian 3rd Gen aircrafts tend to have an airframe life of 25 years, we fly them for 35 years and complain when they crash

The 17 Su30MKI and 9 Mig 29K that we are inducting this year will provide a much better capability boast than which was lost by scraping older Mig21/27
