As many as 500 retired soldiers of the Pakistan Army have joined the Sindh police on Sunday.

According to the Sindh Police spokesman, they were appointed to combat terrorism in the city.

“They will be appointed in the sensitive areas of Karachi after one month training”, he told.

He further said that some 600 other retired soldiers would join the police in coming weeks.

It is a good decision not based on any good spirits, but law of necessity was the basic reason.

The police department needs to be structured to face the coming challenges of the future.

A couple of basic structural changes are immediately required.

1- Police services should be separated from the central superior services, e.g. ISSB in the army

2- Promotion and transfers should be based on seniority rather than politically backed promotion boards.

3- Everyone in the police has to start from the basic level and then promoted to the top positions e.g. as it is in the army.

Yes, they probably are but the training may be more ''doctrinal'' than tactical as I believe the soldiers must already be fire arm proficient and will probably have more experience tactical than the average policeman

This is good job Jawan often retires at an early age and after many of them don't get good jobs so this would be good for them and they will not have to be trained at least weapons training

I hope some young men from Sindh will also join in soon.

Sindh Police needs to be 500,000 in numbers equipped with Helmets, Bullet Proof jackets, Ak-47s and small arms being supplied by POF.

Three things;

Firstly they are well trained/experienced and will contribute greatly to the fight.

There is no need to show their pictures, especially in such a highly volatile city.

More such men are needed and time to form secret death squads, especially for the TTP. These are not normal criminals and shouldn't be treated as such.
