BAGHDAD — At least five missiles hit a sprawling Iraqi army base hosting U.S. troops in the country’s western desert Monday, two Iraqi security officials said.
The officials said the Grad missiles struck inside the Ain al-Asad base in Iraq’s western Anbar province and caused minor damages but no casualties.

The officials said the missiles hit only a few meters (yards) from where U.S. forces are stationed. The officals spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media.
The culprits were not immediately known, but the U.S. has previously accused Iran-backed Iraqi militia groups of targeting the American presence in Iraq, including the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The attacks were once a frequent occurence, but have lessened in recent months.
In March, Iran attacked Iraq’s northern city of Irbil with a dozen ballistic missiles claiming it was targeting Israeli spy centers. Iraq later said an investigation found there was no Israeli presence in the areas. The attack was also considered a warning to the U.S., a staunch ally of Israel.
U.S.-led coalition forces recently ended their combat mission in Iraq, but continue to play an advisory role to Iraqi forces in the fight against the Islamic State extremist group.

The situation was slightly more complex. In fact the US stepped in belatedly, after letting down its supposed partners i.e. the Iraqi army and watching on as "I"SIS brought practically half the country under its control.

When the US finally proceeded to intervene it was not just any point time but, surprise surprise, right after the Iranian-backed PMU were done securing Shia-majority areas (where solidarity with the Iranian-led Resistance Axis is a given) and removing "I"SIS from the vicinity, readying themselves to liberate additional regions especially Tikrit and Mosul.

Which, if the US regime had not meddled then, would have led to evenly distributed presence of Iran-friendly groups across the nation and also to a bridging of gaps between communities and a less fragmented Iraqi central state. Prospects that aren't really tolerable to Washington.

Maybe that's why 600+ US occupation troops were eliminated by Iranian-backed Resistance groups at the height of the occupation of Iraq.
