DHAKA, Oct 17, 2012 (BSS) - Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain today said the government would send five lakh workers to Malaysia by the next five years.

"The government would send workers to Kuala Lumpur under the Government to Government (G to G) arrangement first to reduce high migration cost," Mosharraf said while addressing an installation ceremony of the newly elected non-gazetted government employee's samity of Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) here.

Chaired by BMET Director General Begum Shamsun Nahar, the programme was also addressed, among others, by secretary of the ministry Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan, samity president Dr M Nurul Islam and other officials.

The minister said that there is a possibility to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysian government next month.

He said Malaysian government has offered to recruit manpower from Bangladesh under G to G arrangement to reduce migration expenses and curbing human trafficking.

Mosharraf said presently Malaysia needs around 1-1.5 million foreign workers for development work of the country, of which Bangladesh is expected to send around 0.5 to 0.7 workers to Malaysia.

"The government has discussed and finalized with Malaysian government about manpower exporting issues," he said.

The Minister said Malaysia is actively considering to re- open the stalled labour market.

Later, Begum Shamsun Nahar administered an oath to the elected members of the samity.
