5 bizarre political moments that raised your eyebrows in 2016
Posted on December 31, 2016
Politics in Pakistan is more about drama and less about politics and that’s what exactly we saw in the year 2016 too. We bet 2017 will not be any different…for sure.
For now, here is a quick round-up of how our politicians made us wonder…Did actually vote for them???
When Khawaja Asif called Shireen Mazari a “tractor trolley”
Making an impertinent remark, particularly against a woman is possibly the easiest task on earth and even on the floor of our assemblies. In one such National Assembly session, Khawaja Asif did a political blunder.
He was giving a speech the assembly session on load-shedding this year in Ramzan when PTI MNA Shireen Mazari protested against some of his points and what Asif did next was pretty impolite.
“Someone, make this tractor trolley keep quiet,” said Asif exasperated by Mazari’s interruption.
It is high time that our politicians must learn to take open criticism in 2017, keeping their egos aside.
When PTI wanted a ban on Japanese cartoon “Doraemon”
Pakistan
President Hussain presents ‘Nishan-e-Imtiaz’ to COAS, CJCSC
Justice Saqib Nisar takes oath as new Chief Justice of Pakistan
Pakistan ready to give dossier on Indian interference to UN
Indian troops resort to unprovoked shelling at LoC: ISPR
CPEC funds increased up to $57bn, no change in route: president
Yes, in the middle of so many crises, legislators in the Punjab Assembly did find some time to discuss Doraemon.
In August, PTI lawmaker Malik Taimoor submitted a resolution seeking a ban a Hindi dubbed version Japanese cartoon series in Pakistan.
“The language used in cartoons [including Doraemon] is ruining our societal values,” the resolution submitted by Taimoor read.
“Cartoon channels run 24 hours are having a negative impact on the academic and physical well-being of children…The language that is used in the cartoons is destroying our societal norms.”
Was that a bigger issue than health or education?
When JUI-F senator Hafiz Hamdullah on live TV “abused female analyst”
Analyst Marvi Sirmed had to go through a harrowing experience of her life on TV when JUI-F Senator Hafiz Hamdullah threatened her with assault during a talk show.
Reacting vehemently just when the female analyst had started giving her opinion on the absence of a response from the Council of Islamic Ideology concerning honour killings, the senator went to low ebb and misbehaved with Sirmed.
She later explained the entire episode on a Facebook post as the threats were never televised, but Hamdullah never suffered penalties for his unacceptable behaviour.
When Faryal Talpur counted Bilawal on the list of “martyrs”
You have got to check Shehla Raza’s ‘eye-rolling’ when Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Faryal Talpur also Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s phuppo (aunt) had an uncanny slip of the tongue.
At a public address in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Talpur said, “Martyrs never die, they are alive” and went on to saying, she believes “Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is with us, BB (Benazir Bhutto) shaheed (martyr) is us at the gathering and her son Bilawal Bhutto “shaheed” is also with us”.

When MQM founder lost control due to “mental stress”
How can Altaf Hussain, let alone Pakistanis forget the day when he sent a crowd of party supporters and workers, what for…to attack media houses including ARY News…and that too LIVE on TV. And if this was not enough, the political bigwig raised anti-Pakistan slogans and even called it a “cancer” in a telephonic address to MQM workers protesting outside the Karachi Press Club on August 22.
The MQM founder later tried to rationalise his action by saying “I was under severe mental stress over extra-judicial arrests and precarious condition of my workers sitting at the hunger strike camp.” Was that really justifiable? Decide yourself.
