Baku, Azerbaijan, July 25

By Elchin Mehdiyev - Trend:

The Azerbaijani armed forces prevented the Armenian armed forces’ attempted diversion along the line of contact and border areas, the Azerbaijani defense ministry said July 25.

As a result, five Armenian servicemen and an Azerbaijani serviceman were killed.

The Armenian armed forces tried to make a diversion July 24 day and night by firing a shell at Azerbaijani positions in the direction of the Goranboy, Aghdam, Terter and Fuzuli districts, as well as the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border on the territory of the Gadabay district, the statement said.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The attempted sabotage was prevented. At least five Armenian servicemen were killed.

When preventing the enemy's attempted sabotage, Azerbaijani soldier Eldar Fataliyev was killed.

The Azerbaijani defense ministry expresses condolences to the relatives of the deceased soldier.

The defense ministry said that the situation on the line of control is fully controlled by the Azerbaijani armed forces.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
