Nah there are still better airports than these

. .
most of my Indian friends really did not like the airports but i think that had to do more with the staff. But as nations mature their airports get better hopefully with better buildings n better training they become world class

Maybe but the New Delhi Airport is world class without a doubt
I find the Chennai and Hyderabad airports as very generic. Sure they are new and with glass and steel design but they dont bring anything unique like Delhi or Mumbai or Kolkata airport do.

Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata are new as well but they reflect more culture, more different so to speak.

An airport should do what it is supposed to do, handle traffic, should be easy for travelers to navigate, security has to be reliable, goods should be handled properly etc. etc. No point in making them a showcase for modern arts.

The airports that we are talking about here, I have been to all of them, and all of them are excellent.

Really impressive. I only wish if the cities these airports belongs to are fractionally close to being as impressive as this in terms of cleanliness & commuting!

An airport can do both - do what it is essentially meant to do and be a showcase for the culture of the city or the state it is in. This is particularly apt for airports of capital cities of our states like Hyderabad or Bangalore or Kolkata.

Delhi, Bombay and Kolkata have shown that this is possible, so has Beijing.

I didnt say these airports were not good, I said they could have been more different.

no sir the airport is the first look into the country remember many people now transit in airports and the image they get there might be the only image they have of India..

i am sure they are all nice in their terms but the thing that really needs to be worked on is air port staff because that is what is weak as i heard lots of things from Indian friends. and why generic airports at this age and time ?

The airport staff is becoming better with time now.
Some airport staff are becoming better faster than others because they are privatized. The Government ones are slower to change. But they are all changing now.

By generic here, I mean the Indian generic design version as it has evolved. It should have been mandatory for all state capitals to have a unique airport. The rest of the airports of smaller cities can have the generic design.

Sometimes its bureaucratic risk aversion that leads to the generic design. For example -Chennai airport was made by Government instead of a private company, and they went with a proven design rather than something untested.

Tamil Nadu has such a rich culture, it is a pity to me that the airport does little to convey that. Same with Hyderabad.

And considering that most of the Japanese private investment in India is becoming concentrated in Tamil Nadu, the importance of Chennai airport(which till now was not much compared to Bombay or Delhi or Kolkata) is going to rise exponentially. Government should have been willing to try something new. I can only hope that the new terminals that are built there are different.

.
and i do not understand Hyderabad being generic either is it not the silicon capital of India and should that not be a prominent theme in the airport
Bangalore is the Silicon/Tech capital of India, not Hyderabad.

Images are just fine.. I don't see any problem there.
The older airport in Kolkata was a little shabby. The new one is great.

The point is we don't really need to make it a competition for showcasing artwork. They should look elegant and plesant, yes and should get the job done with efficiency, that's all.

hmm.. showcasing the culture. There may be a point there..I agree. But we shouldn't be overdoing it. Or probably its just me who is always wary about the costs. That money comes out of common people's pocket. That airport in Hyderabad, do they still take the "airport development fee", whenever you enter the airport ?
