45th martyrdom anniversary of Maj Shabbir Sharif Shaheed being observed today
LAHORE: The 45th martyrdom anniversary of Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed is being observed today in the country with great reverence.
Major Shabir Sharif Shaheed was martyred at Sulemanki Headworks during the 1971 war and was awarded Nishan-e-Haider on his extraordinary gallantry. He was the elder brother of former Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Shairf.
Major Shabir was born on April 28, 1943 in Kunjah village in Gujrat District of Punjab. He was eager to join army due to his maternal uncle Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed and joined Pakistan Army on April 9, 1964.
In 1971 war, he was deployed in Sulemanki Headworks sector to command a regiment of Frontier Corps. He was tasked to takeover a major bund for which he had to pass through a 10-feet deep and 30-feet wide canal by sailing and to cross an area where they enemy had planted landmines.
Major Shabbir Sharif fought valiantly and ousted the enemy from its position on December 3. Some 45 enemy’s soldiers were killed in the fight and four tanks were destroyed.
On the mid night between December 5 and 6,Major Shabir Sharif killed the company commander of Assam Regiment and completely took over the bund.
On December 6, the enemy launched a counter attack and while pushing back the attack, Majaor Shabir Shaheed embraced martyrdom when he was hit by a mortal shell of the enemy.
He was posthumously awarded the highest gallantry award Nishan-e-Haider by government of Pakistan.
On Tuesday, a simple but graceful ceremony was held at his Mazar in Miani Sahib graveyard in Lahore.
General Officer Commanding Major General Fida Hussain Malik was chief guest on the occasion, who laid floral wreath and offered fateha on the Shaheed’s grave. Jawans from Pak Army paid salute to the Shaheed’s grave. Former Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif along with his wife also laid floral wreath and offered Fateha on the Mazar.
